And how much development has there been around the casino? ZERO. Imagine what would have popped up all around a casino in downtown Wichita.

I'm not a gambler, and I tend to view most gambling as a tax on the poor and those who aren't good at probabilities and statistics.

That being said, I would have greatly enjoyed the ancillary benefits of the Mulvane casino sitting right between IBA and the Waterwalk.

I disagree that there are no problems and I would rather we not have Kansas gambling. But anyone could see it coming, and most of the problems will happen to Wichita families anyway (with Mulvane a stones throw away) Our downtown would more likely have brought people in from Western Kansas and elsewhere with downtown options of things to do. If we had Bass Pro, etc.

People are going to gamble one way or another. Wichita might as well have just benefited from that fact.

          • Gambling can be done for entertainment, much like drinking alcohol. Yes, there are some Robles associated with it, but show me an economic growth that doesn't.

The ones who were against literally EVERYTHING that could help move Wichita forward and make it a better place to live, because it might at some level cost them a nominal sum of their own money. They were against the idea of what would become IBA, against the downtown casino (successfully killed off by the CAVE-ers), against Waterwalk (successfully nuetured and permanently hindered due to the early work of the CAVE-ers and their leader Mayor Carlos Mayans), and so on and so forth.

Well the CAVE-ers had children and grandchildren, and they ended up populating WSU's SGA, and a small proportion of the student body. They're against everything that might help move the University forward, in spite of the fact that: #1 - WSU remains a screaming cheap value as far getting a traditional degree at a real school goes, and #2 - the ideas to move WSU forward might add <2-3% onto the ultimate total cost of their education.

We could call them the WSU SAVE-ers, only they're not saving anything, and are in fact a hinderance to the progress and transformation of WSU. They're more like a parasite or a cancer, actually.

EDIT: Fixed my less-than/greater-than sign error.
Actually, the CAVE-ers started about 20 - 25 years ago. There was a real push to put a down-town trolley system in. The push was to develop downtown and give it a unique look and feel. Kind of a San Antonio river walk crossed with the San Fran Trolley system. I went to several meetings about it. OMG! You would not believe the crazy SH%T that was said about those in favor. "Socialists, United Nations Lunatics, and One World Government believers....." It was insane. Many in Wichita lack the vision to see 2 weeks into the future let alone 10 to 15 years from now. Yet, those same idiots are NOW proud of WSU and Gregg Marshall.

I would like to say Thank you Mr. Koch for being a person to look to the future of WSU.

I know he's an alum and all, but he has a grat thing going at UCLA.
Indiana can do better than Alford. Dude lost 31 games the last 2 years and has no idea what defense is. This year is the anomaly.

                    Hearing Hoiberg is being contacted.

I'm not sure how great of a coach he is (damn good recruiter), but he'd be a "name hire", if that's what they want.

                      "Gregg Marshall to Indiana.
                      Barry Hinson to Wichita State.
WSU goes 19-12 in 2017-18 with everybody back from a Sweet 16 team and Hinson tells the world at a press conference how bad of shape the program was in when he took it over."

                        • If they are smart, the top three names they call are Marshall, Holtmann and Miller. My bet is they have too big of egos involved to want to mess with Marshall so the next 2 should be their top choices.

Hoiberg and Alford would be a step down from the names above when it comes to actual ability.

Hoiberg actually "recruited" at a very average level as he had no appetite to be subservient to 17 year olds. He built his teams with an occasional high school guy mixed in with tons of D1 and juco transfers.

Even Morris (who is spectacular) was Michigan's to lose until they decided Walton was better. He fell into IsU's lap when that happened.

They're hoping, anyway. Got to get back on top of the heap in the state somehow.

Meanwhile, back to reality -- Alford ought to be absolutely campaigning (on the QT, of course) for the job. Back home in Indiana, as the saying goes, plus escaping UCLA while the opportunity is there to do it (much like McDermott from Iowa State to Creighton, just in the nick of once upon a time), plus no more aggravation from LaVar Ball and his family. It's a match made in Hoosier heaven.

Matt Nolander proposed Marshall to UCLA idea. No way Marshall puts up with the LA BS; especially the Ball stuff.

Also, his $3.5M in Wichita goes farther than Alford's' $2.8M in LA.
