  • I believe he gets $900,000 base salary. He gets an additional $125K or something in that ballpark for every year he stays at WSU. I don't know if that $125K is immediately available.

So he would get $900,000 + $125,000 in year 2 of the contract. If he makes it through year 3 he makes $900,000 + $125,000. If he makes it to year 4 he gets $900,000 + $125,000. There may be some CPI adjustments to his base salary annually, although I'm not sure. Also there are a number of performance bonuses in his contract.

So really his base compensation is $1,025,000 or thereabouts.

At least that's my understanding and I will be the 1st to admit I have not looked at his contract. Just going by what has been reported. One of these days we need to pull his contract up and look at at.

I don't believe we have a $12 million reserve account at our disposal like South Carolina does. I guess that is $9.6 million now after buying out Coach Horn.

Marshall makes $900000.00 base with a $150000.00 bonus each year he stays. Key word is bonus, not raise.

Oh, I see, so that $125k isn't added to his base each year like a raise, it's a bonus. I get it now, I totally misunderstood how that worked.

Correct. So he is really making $1,050,000 per year. Would have to see the contract to determine if any of the $150,000 annual bonus is deferred comp. This year he picks up $18 grand for the NCAA appearance.

He no doubt has some ancillary income but he will have that wherever he goes.

The auto-renewing rolling 7-year contract is also a pretty nice security blanket that very few coaches probably enjoy.

Yes, except apparently it is an annual $150,000 bonus for each year he stays at WSU. I think WSU can sweeten the pot some. We could probably raise his base to $1,000,000 and I would like to see the performance bonuses bumped up, perhaps at least doubled.

Seems like he has pretty sweet deal job security wise as is.

Don't get me wrong, he's a great coach, and I hope he stays here forever, but usually coaches have to win a few games in the tournament before teams start salivating over them.
For me, its all about stability. But, if he goes, then we will get another top notch coach, ready to take over the reigns of a top 25 program, coming off a good season. Just watching the tournament, there is not a shortage of them out there. Norfolk State's, John Cooper, Jans? Lots of options.

                • Shaka Smart and Gregg Marshall will be the hottest names for athletic directors with vacancies. But will the VCU and Wichita State coaches listen this year?

                  • Well if Shaka is making 1.2 mil I would like to see wsu match it with everything including bonuses. I know we are close, so maybe a base of 1.2 mil with a bonus every year of 125k if he stays after the end of the year.

Also for what its worth I know that Danny Manning would be interested in coaching for WSU from the people I have talked to. IMO its not a rumor, its a fact.

I would trade manning for marshall if we can get Perry Ellis to follow him to wsu, along with keeping the majoirty of our recuits, especially fred van fleet. We would be an outstanding team.

I meant if Marshall left us for USC I would take Manning.

                        • If/when we have to replace Marshall (it won't be this year), I think we should give Manning a look if he's interested in the job. Guy has some recruiting skills.

I think the Kansas guys look at Wichita State strictly as a stepping-stone, to be used.

OK. I don't follow KU that much, but how does one know he has recruiting skills when doing that recruiting to KU. I even thought that they lost out on a few they were counting on over the last couple of years and had a spot or two open. I'm not sure you can count the latest players from Wichita as the North kid was drooling over the opportunity to go to KU and I really don't think Manning would have been the difference in getting Ellis to WSU.

My other question is how does anyone know Manning can run his own show? Getting recruits is one thing. Coaching a program and hiring the right assistants to make them winners is something else.

I might challenge a couple of comments in that article....first Lynn didn't exactly stay behind for emotional reasons....the kids had school, they had to settle things and sell their home etc. This was the first big check Gregg was getting and it's not like when you move from a million dollar job to another one where dropping say 30-50 grand to have someone do all the work for you is no big deal.

Plus I am fairly certain the inlaws moved to Wichita. I could be mistaken or thinking of the wrong family member.
