Jans is getting $2.4 million base salary in Stark Vegas. Are we gonna pay a number that starts with 3? I kinda doubt it.

If he’s going come back to the Sunflower State to coach college basketball, I’m almost afraid that there would be a better chance for him to wind up at Mount Oread than here in the 316.

We had our chance at Chris, but Darron f***ing blew it.

There are roughly 6,000 fans that will return if and when we return to a national powerhouse type program. I would call those the bandwagoners. The Cohen, Thompson and Smithson teams were worse than the current team and we were probably pulling the same 4-5K fans to those games.
Nope. Myself, and I know of some others here, not going right now were part of that 4 to 5K fans.

        • With the way the transfer rules have become, there are a large group of people who have lost all interest in college sports whatsoever.

          • Let us not forget that Mississippi State is in Mississippi. That means the coach and his family, has to live there. There is a good possibility the prospect of coming back to Wichita to live might be very attractive.

              Not just Mississippi, but Starkville.

Just my opinion - but - IIRC - we were paying 3G quite a bit more than that. Unless we are going to try to hire an up and comer (somewhat risky) we need to go after a proven coach and shell out the $$. Hopefully we won't take any chances on the next hire ie. Missouri State

                • The moment the outside guys were brought in to do an investigation, Boatright knew they would find enough that someone had to go. It could have been Boatright for not taking control of his department or it could have been Marshall for creating the situation that Boatright had not taken care of.

Boatright had access to Golden - and THAT'S where the disaster unfolded. All Boatright had to do was report Marshall as insubordinate and unable to be controlled. That may have been true and there could have been documentation. Instead of Golden doing his own investigation, he rewarded Boatright with a contract extension and a 37.5% increase in his salary.

Had Golden been interested in doing any actual work and interested in the future of WSU basketball, he would have interviewed Marshall and learned that Boatright knew all the details that would be exposed in the investigation and did NOTHING about it at the time. In that case Marshall's job could have been saved, some remedial action taken to soften the blow from whatever would come out of the investigation, and Boatright replaced for dereliction of his duties to control the employees under him

I might add that Marshall was unpopular on the academic side of WSU at that time. A number of professors thought he put a bad light on WSU because of his temperament and displays of anger. Lynn getting ****-faced drunk at an NCAA tourney and getting escorted out of the crowd by security escalated the anti-Marshall attitude among WSU professional staff. That made it easy for Golden to just accept what Boatright said and take the easy way out.

Multiple layers of utter incompetence and multiple layers of taking the easy way out is what cost Marshall his job and the athletic department a severance package they absolutely can not afford to pay

By the time it's financially feasible to hire a proven coach it could be too late to hire a proven coach. The best we can hope for now is that IB can keep WSU close enough to respectable that Saal can convince donors to trust him and that a quality coach can be hired after the utter and total disaster that incompetence at every level above Marshall created the situation we're in today.

I think a good analogy can be seen between IB and Craig Steven. Steven was a 4-year starter as walkon at PG. He wasn't very good and it was obvious why he was a walkon, but he was all they had and did the best he could.

The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Gotta have the money to pay it .. We are still paying 3G .. if we fire HCIB .. we will still be paying him .. that would be nearly 3 mil in payments to coaches not coaching if we fire him this year .. can we afford another another 3+ mil to get a proven coach? I don't think the money is there ...

as far as I recall, it was a select group on donors that paid 3G, not Chuck

I just assumed he was a big part of that group.

Chuck doesn't need to be part of group, he is his own group

                            • Everyone just assumes Uncle Chuck simply mails in regular payments to the AD. Outside of some pocket change (relative to him) to get his name on the arena, what exactly has he done? He's no TBP like a lot of fans assume. If he was budget would never be an issue. I just don't think he's all that interested in athletics.

What I don't understand is why he wasn't hired prior to the start of the 2020-2021 season. Marshall coached his last game in March 2020. There was an entire summer to do a job search. Instead we elevated an assistant to interim head coach. Nothing against Isaac Brown, but he had never been a head coach before. Wichita State is not a program that brings in head coaches that have never been head coaches before. It's a destination job for head coaches who have earned their stripes elsewhere.
Yeah that's the problem was the team had a couple games get cancelled and won the conference, then the players all rallied behind him and really wanted to keep him. To be honest most, if not everyone, wanted to keep him. Honestly it's a shame that we did so well that season because the repercussions will be felt for years now. That would've been an extremely attractive job and to be honest I still think it will be when it opens up.
