Having basketball only WITH football schools in a 16-team super conference put them in trouble. There's a lot more that went into it.

Why did it get them in trouble?

It didn't. What ruined the BE is that that they started trying to expand all over the place with no regard to the quality of institution they were adding. By doing so, they were weakening both football and basketball. That's when the basketball schools moved to protect themselves from what was coming. If anything, it was the football schools that brought on the destruction of the BE. Hybrids can work with actual balance and not one side trying to absolutely dominate the other. They could have kept a positive balance without a rush to expand and not destroyed what they had.

And what's funny is the BE was a much better basketball conference than it was a football conference, but the football schools, for whatever reason, didn't want to accept that and started to water down both sides.

As others have said, the problem was CUSA football schools being added all over the country.

Others already said it, but that is a lie. Every school that left the big east was a football school. By the time the basketball schools left, there were only two or three football members left. The basketball members built the big east and were the only stable part of the conference.

It is revisionist history to say otherwise. The experience of the big east clearly shows the stability of basketball only schools and the instability of football schools.

I would love for us to be in the AAC, though. Even with the knowledge that it will never be stable and the football members will always be jockeying for the next step up.

Lol...I won't be lectured by WSU fans...we may or may not want ONE Olympic sports member to offset Navy in 2015...but no more than one.

We in the AAC will not be dictated to by b-ball only schools...thus the C7 break-up.

And I'm sure they're done with the football schools as well as they're stronger in the long term without them. How you can dispute that football is what brought on the breakup of the Big East is beyond me. It was a revolving door of football schools and both sports were being hurt by the replacements. You and the other football schools can bury your heads in the sand and blame the basketball schools, but that's simply dishonest and everyone knows it.

If you are talking BCS revenue, that is certainly true. If you are on the outside of that system, it is much less clear.

Fair or not, the American was widely perceived as the nation's sixth-best football conference before the defections, only this is the last year with BCS automatic-qualifying status. Now, the dividing line between the five power conferences and the smaller “Group of 5,” where the American finds itself, is clearly cut by more than $100 million from now to 2020.

As far as I'm concerned, seven schools are in the new big east that were in the old. Three are in the AAC. You're still conference USA, and I have a hard time keeping a straight face listening to how seven schools that watched a dozen football schools leave screwed over the three teams that were left. At least two of which that were openly campaigning for a spot in the ACC.

As for football making all the money, I guess that's why your TV contract is bigger than theirs?

I'm an FSU alumni. Does that make me more credible in "lecturing" you? I think it's funny listening to you lecture teams that were in the BE since it's founding coming from a fan of a school that hasn't played one game there yet.

You have some awesome revisionist history going there if you think the breakup happened because of them dictating to you and you taking a stand. I somehow think it has more to do with them getting double the TV money by not becoming members of conference USA.

End of the day, basketball built the Big East. Football killed it. I would rather wsu was in the aac, but don't kid yourself. You aren't relevant in either now.
