Coming into the season 3G praised Conner's offensive prowess, but noted he needed to improve his D, with some thinly veiled shots at the Rug's / Big12-2's defensive standards thrown in for good measure. Early in the year we saw that defensive intensity - ball denial, ball pressure, fighting through screens, etc. was still a weakness for Conner. Many a time during games 3G has invited CF to a chat followed by a sit on the bench after defensive missteps.
Late in the MSU game after it was well in hand, Conner made a play on D while pressing in the backcourt. IIRC it was a deflection that turned into a steal after he hustled to snag it away from a couple nearby MSU players. I'm probably reading too much into a garbage time play that I happened to see in person fairly up close (a benefit of attending road games is that you can get close seats far more economically than at Koch), but I hadn't yet seen that kind of play from him. I couldn't help but think 'the transformation is happening'.
I doubt (but hope he proves me wrong) that we'll ever view Conner as a defensive stopper. But that play and the further defensive improvement it hopefully foreshadows reminded me of why we love 3G.
