  • Does Gladwell define “elite” as wealthy families or high test score students? I would think that schools that have higher admission standards are looking at SAT scores, not family finances.

Mm hmm. Sticking with the "not never." Good.

But I'll bet for once that's not what they were saying over on the phog the last time a Valley team whipped Self. What were they saying then? Was that right before you were exiled, or right after?

      • Nobody denies that the US News ranking is flawed. That doesn't change the fact that it is used and creates certain perceptions of schools.

And SMU and Tulsa aren't leaving for the MWC. The AAC is still expected to make more than the MWC as is. They're not paying exit fees to go make less. And the east coast schools aren't dropping down to play the Belt.

I'm still not convinced that the XII adds anymore after OU and Texas depart. If they don't, the AAC will go after and most likely land the west wing. If they do expand by 2 more, the MWC still might be able to be raided as Boise carries their current media deal. Maybe CBS or whoever is willing to pay more to jeep them together than ESPN is to boost the American at that point. Time will tell.

But the AAC can land some schools that would be middle of the conference teams from the get go. They wouldn't drag the conference down and could build up being in a higher profile conference. The AAC is still where we want to be.

Nobody does conference realignment on "academics". If they did then the Ivy League would be in the SEC.

            Idiot.

            • NCAA about to announce its decsion on Memphis basketball.

"Updated timelines for each of the six cases currently being reviewed by the IARP will be published on the group's website, Hanna said Tuesday. "

I don't know how to find or use that site, but reports I've heard indicate that Memphis' penalties will be announced Monday, October 11.

              • I think if you’re the one calling the shots at WSU the most important thing to remember is, fans are not going to be completely sold on staying in the AAC. The whole thought of going to the AAC if we were never going to bring back football was a bad idea from the get go and it’s coming back to bite us, hard, right now. The fans definitely want a new conference which absolutely isn’t the Valley. Staying in the AAC or going back to the Valley will ultimately be the final nail in the coffin for WSU athletics. Our leadership faces difficult decisions ahead

uhh, the Ivy League would gladly decline that invite. The Big 10 certainly has academic requirements of its member institutions.

Are you sure you didn’t mean:
No one does conference realignment on “academics.”
If they did then the Ivy League schools would have turned down multiple invitations to the SEC.

The ivies would lose money joining the sec The real money is in the endowments! The smallest endowment in the Ivy League would be the 2nd most in the SEC Texas A & M is a weird outlier at over 10B then Vanderbilt, about the same as brown The rest of the SEC is poor relative to Ivy League money

Rather than name calling, you and Gladwell might learn something by familiarizing yourself with the AAU (American Association of Universities). Many of those casting votes in the US News ranking appear to be familiar with one another and the academic activities of institutions included in said rankings. I am not apologizing for or endorsing the obvious "in-breeding" (elitism) present in this environment.
AAU is an association of leading comprehensive research universities. Membership in AAU is by invitation only.

The Ivy League and B1G have been recognized by other Shockernetters but the following link is provided for your edification

                          • We didn't move to the AAC because of athletics.

Barring a complete dissolution of the conference, we won't change conferences in the future because of athletics.

John Bardo on joining the AAC ...

“Two years ago we set out on a fact-finding process to determine the best way athletics could help position the university for enrollment growth and enhance WSU's reputation as an academic and research institution. With the help of College Sports Solutions, a national consulting firm, we examined numerous options, including staying where we were. It became clear to us that The American offered the best combination of universities that share our academic and cultural values and research focus.

"The University of Tulsa, Southern Methodist University (in Dallas) and the University of Houston are located in areas of Oklahoma and Texas that make up part of the prime areas where we want to recruit students."

It was purely a business decision by the university. Bardo perceived correctly that our athletic success and national athletics brand gave us standing to knock on the door. But it was Bardo's vision for the university (still largely aspirational at that time) that was carefully packaged and sold to the AAC presidents to allow us to pass through it.
“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

                            ― Chris Stirewalt

President John Bardo was a great man for Wichita State, Wichita and the State of Kansas - thanks for reminding us of his greatness.
