Coach Gregg Marshall Investigation

Sad to see this happening to Coach Marshall.
There isn't any loyalty anymore.
He was great for our university.
A fantastic advocate for Wichita.
A mentor to hundreds of young men who he coached and trained into the best basketball players and men they could be.
A winner who singlehandedly bring us to the top of the college basketball scene and moved us into a bigger, better conference.

And now, because of some malcontents raising issues that are several years old, led on by a no account supposed "reporter," obviously intent on ruining Marshall, a man with none of the qualities, abilities or success of Coach Marshall, we are going to run him off.
No second chances with the cancel culture mob, no gratitude for what he did for the university or city.
Just discard him like yesterday's trash.

We will never again reach the heights we had with him, we will sink like a rock for a decade, and we will deserve to.

I am sad that we don't work to restore him and support him in his hour of need.
Again, there is no loyalty and I find it disgusting.

As a proud WSU graduate, I religiously followed every game on radio or television although having been gone from Wichita for 30 years.

I grew up listening to "Wichita State is on the go, watch the Shockers move on in victory, take your family to the game, root the Shockers on to fame, Wichita wins for you."
That jingle goes back to the 1960's, Stallworth, Bowman, Armstrong, Wylie, etc.
I haven't yet decided if I will still watch or care about WSU going forward.
That is hard for me to say.
But loyalty matters to me, and I don't see it here.

I almost completely agree with you. But I am sorry you feel this way. I will be a Shocker through and through, regardless of the decision the university makes on HCGM.

I almost never had a choice in the matter. I have a few less years of fandom than you for sure. My vivid WSU memories begin with the Mark Turgeon era. I listened to games with my father in the garage. I remember watching the Shockers bear the Vols to go to the Sweet 16 in 2006 after coming home from a baseball fundraiser. My dad was a graduate of Wichita State in 1988 I believe. I heard the tales and experienced the heartache of the 90s, though I wasn’t old enough to comprehend. As a former student and athlete at this university, I hope you find a way to continue your support. It is appreciated and needed, possibly now more than ever.

If Marshall is gone, and that is still an IF, I would be 100% against the decision. The last time I thought a coach had run his course was when Gene Stephenson was fired, and I now wholeheartedly regret those thoughts/opinions. A dent in the pocketbook may be required, and that I understand. But our hearts bleed black and yellow.

Jesus you're delusional. Why are y'all so scared to admit what happened instead of finding some "alternative fact" to justify it? Shut up. You're making the entire fan base look bad. GM is a bad person. Punched a student, choked an assistant coach, and tried to fight another student over a damn parking spot. If the independent investigation didn't confirm these things to be true, we wouldn't be in this position. Gregg screwed Gregg.

Also, a recent podcast with Ron Baker shows his hand on this story. He didn't say much, but its obvious where he stands. He said he will tell his story eventually. I'm interested to see if he gets crucified on this board like Shaq has.

Excellent Post. For those that witnessed, they know what has been reported is just the tip of the iceberg. It's not like Marshall was discreet, it's not like it was just a couple of incidents. Hundreds must have witnessed behavior that any other coach would have been fired over. imho this is good for WSU & Marshall, after 3 years of mediocrity in a new conference. Plus this year after so many players transferring the record is probably going to be really terrible. And recruiting would be very difficult for years. As tough as this is now, it may be better for Marshall's recovery, also. imho, it will be best for WSU, Wichita & the State of Kansas. Shockers have had great teams & they will again.

Everything you're wishing we would have done was possible until Marshall made his "none of this ever happened" statement. Solving the problem required acceptance of responsibility, contrition, an apology to Morris, and a public statement of working to do better.

The public statement we got was "the players are liars". He made it worse for himself. Now he's got to do everything he needed before that statement and he has to retract and apologize for that statement.

I'm thinking Marshall's personal issue keeping him away from practice is his time to make the decision to do the things needed to stay ss WSU's coach. If Marshall stays, WSU has to clean up his image, and Marshall has to be involved with that. If Marshall won't cooperate with WSU doing some damage control on his image, that's on Marshall.

Maybe the meeting on campus where Marshall was (reportedly) escorted off campus was the meeting where he was told what he had to do to save his job or the insubordination clause in his contract would kick in and invalidate his buyout. Then Marshall got some time to decide whether to stay or leave. That would explain the silence, the absence from practices - pretty much everything going on.

AND... In soooooooome cases, when certain players/sources REFUSE to talk to the media, and say they want nothing to do with their work, they STILL include them in their story and ascribe racially-driven interpretations to their lives. Geeee, why don't people trust the media?

Since when is a 4 seed (granted, disappointing showing in tournament) and another likely NCAA Tournament berth considered “mediocre?” I know we want to win games and make runs but let’s not act like getting the dance ticket shouldn’t be celebrated.

I wonder if “those things” only happened toward certain players, during one season, or was it standard protocol for a while. It seems like the players before and after that certain squad have high praise for him. Very interesting and hopefully some clarity comes from all this. Either way, if he is fired, there will be good reason. You can’t keep a coach no matter what, just because he’s the winningest coach. If he’s retained and suspended, we need to support that too. He could have just been more authoritarian. Many coaches go through their strict/confrontational periods, which is usually driven by new personnel or undisciplined teams. When Bear Bryant took his team to Junction, I don't think that was ever meant to become what it was. Coaching is really an art.

So I decided to watch the 10 o'clock news on Thursday night to see how the local media was handling things given there wasn't really anything to report regarding WSU basketball yesterday other than Marshall wasn't at practice. The start of the news was pretty much like every other night instead with stories of covid, etc. So I'll jump to the sports:

KWCH - I have to admit I didn't see their sports because I had turned to KSN and KAKE first and by the time they had mentioned WSU and I flipped back to KWCH, the sports was already over.

KSN - covered Marshall not at practice in sports and then incredibly put words in *******'s tweet about parting ways. The sportscaster talks about the tweet and says ******* said there was a good possibility something would happen this week. Huh?? Tuesday night ******* first tweeted "BREAKING: Wichita State and Gregg Marshall are expected to part ways by the end of the week" and 30 minutes later tweeted "Wichita State and Gregg Marshall expected to part ways, and it could happen as soon as Wednesday" I know it's Thursday night, plus we're getting close to the end of the week, but just stick to the words in the tweet if you're going to reference it vs trying to make up why it hasn't happened yet like he tweeted. These days it's not hard for viewers to actually fact check something like what a tweet actually said.

KAKE - covered Marshall not at practice in sports, but at least once prior to going to a commercial during the news, they said something along the lines of 'and coming up in sports, hear why Marshall wasn't at practice today'. I'm thinking 'great - maybe we'll get something besides personal reasons', but then when sports starts all they got was 'Gregg Marshall wasn't at practice today due to personal reasons'. Ugh. But then next we get a clip of Ron Baker on a podcast. So I guess nowadays clips from podcasts are worthy of regurgitation on a tv newscast.


For once I'd like to see the media use the following two things regarding ******* and Marshall to give people a better understanding of the relationship between the two:

1) show a clip from the podcast at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVfDgKnsrIQ from October 9, 2020, where the first question a host asks ******* is is 'when did you first hear about these allegations' and *******'s response is 'let me go back in time to the final four run when I'm on the Dan Patrick show.....' and 'we've had a hot and cold relationship since then.....' (FYI - I didn't actually see the podcast when it first came out, but one day I googled 'Jeff ******* Grudge' and it was the first thing that popped up.)

Verbal abuse and public humiliation, but no hands on players or coaches.

From what I recall, in a leaked audio from a meeting between AD Sexton, players and maybe some parents, it was said that on multiple occasions she was forcing players to play with injuries she didn't believe they had. Basically, she said they were lying about being hurt in spite of doctors and trainers confirming the injuries.

I've been critical of certain members of the media in my posts, but being critical of them for doing what I consider a poor job doesn't mean someone like me has a lack of understanding or hatred for the media. It'd be akin to saying someone like ******* hates all coaches, which obviously isn't true, just because he's critical of Marshall.

I'd be curious to know what you consider "most situations" when it comes to sources. What you say about them is true in some cases, but is not true in all cases. Someone like ******* needed one or two named sources for his main article for legal reasons, I think we both know that, but then he took a lot of liberty by throwing in how he had x number of anonymous sources that said things. He has said they wanted to stay anonymous because they were fearful of how people would react - it has nothing to do with burning bridges in that scenario. I doubt the burning bridges has anything to do with his twitter posts as well. He basically begs for people to send him "any tips, complaints, suggestions".
