  • For the conspiracy theorists out there (and WstateU with his very pretty rendering of the Texas State football stadium), two facts:

    1. According to their website (http://www.txstate.edu/about), Texas State at San Marcos claims 37,979 students. If a school of that size has a 30,000 seat stadium (for perspective, aging Cessna Stadium held that many or more, although most were always disguised as empty seats) and doesn't routinely fill it or come very close -- and, to be honest, doesn't put out a product that commands sufficient interest despite being in a recruiting hotbed like Texas -- what does that say about WSU's prospects? There's a reason K-State is historically bad when Bill Snyder isn't running their program, that The Flagship is usually an embarrassment on the gridiron, and that WSU had the good sense to pull the plug almost 30 years ago.

(And, yes, I know that San Marcos is in the shadow of Austin -- but there are still about a million players who come out of Texas every year, and yet not enough of them can be gathered to support a program worthy of the name that's viewed by actual crowds on a regular basis).

    2. The SunBelt (currently 17th in basketball RPI and with little prospect ever to make a dramatic move up, whereas the Valley is 13th even in a down year for most of the teams who sometimes have a shot at postseason play) is not a desirable conference destination for Wichita State. As someone else said, WSU is not Missouri State. And aren't we glad they aren't?

I think I've made clear my opposition to WSU football restarting. But, IF it is going to happen, it ISN'T going to be for a SunBelt level conference. I believe smarter folks than I have determined that an investment of this type HAS to pay off in more than us just playing football again. No, a significant conference move (more revenue sharing, more exposure for ALL our sports, etc.) is what will be REQUIRED before anything else goes forward. I think Bardo's tweets were just as much for other conferences to sense our commitment as it was to generate enthusiasm amongst WSU supporters.

FWIW, I posted the Texas State Stadium because I liked the looks of the stadium (poor choice); the Sunbelt would be a bad decision and we have smart people at the helm. Sorry to mislead anyone.

I like this one too... :)

        • Years ago there was talk of restarting the program and what would have to happen. Obviously a coaching staff to help plan, recruit and start getting things aligned. Recruit juco and freshmen for the first year and redshirt each and every one of them. Practice, go to school and lift weights and go to meetings. The second year again recruit another class of juco and freshmen. Make a determination which of the 2nd class you need to redshirt. Two recruiting classes lets you build the necessary numbers you need without having to sacrifice talent just for the sake of numbers, and lets you create a redshirt program.

Well I like the looks of Jerry Dome and if I posted a picture of it I hope they wouldn't think I was advocating joining the NFL

The American or MWC would be our best bet to get us started once we are able to move from FCS to FBS. If we have success there we could eventually move up to the Big 12.

Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

You didn't mislead anyone, you simply posted a picture of the type of new-build football facility WSU might look at in this hypothetical.

Not your fault someone fell off of the intellectual wagon and ran naked through the streets, with your post.

The MWC and AAC are THE end game here. If we don't think we could get there, then we don't waste the money or time on football in the first place. Getting into a P5 is not going to happen.

                    • I highly doubt P5 is the goal..Bardo is merely doing whatever it takes to boost enrollment. I would be lying through my teeth if I said I've never heard anyone use the phrase "I wish wsu had a football team" as they were packing their bags for Lawrence or Manhattan.

                      • Even if WSU had a mind-blowingly good football team, there is no way the B12 would take us. Stop.

                        • Yes, please stop with the WSU to the Big 12 stuff. It's not EVER going to happen. It makes me think we're being trolled because it's hard for me to believe anyone is actually being serious when they say that.

Let's focus discussion on actual possibilities, which include several years in an FCS league (MVFC?) with hopefully a move up to the MWC or AAC.

Agree... I know several WSU graduates who currently have football season tickets at KU (yes, KU), K-State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Pitt State and Butler County; yes, a small sample size, however there are football fans in the area that would support the return of WSU football. This isn’t 1986 and the college football landscape has changed dramatically; I’ll support whatever decision is made by the leadership of the university. If they say it’s not financially feasible, I’ll accept the decision and finally put it to rest. We have ‘leadership’ with vision and they’re looking beyond the ‘status quo’.
