Not sure why Delta is hanging around in the Kansas area so long, but give it a week and this whole map will be purple.

Did other previous viral epidemics run similarly? Where contagious overruns deadly? Shouldn’t we know fairly soon the seriousness of this variant?

So do they sequence every test to get those numbers or do they just estimate?

This is a combination of sampling and modeling.

USA cases are cranking and have been for a bit ...



But nationally, so far change in Covid ICU bed usage is unremarkable ...



And deaths have somewhat flat-lined (no pun intended)...



I would guess that deaths are lagging and from delta.

Seems like there is a double whammy in play here:

1) Omicron is weaker and mild
2) Lots of people have a robust cellular response from vaccinations and previous infections

This is normal/expected viral evolution. It happened much faster than I would have expected though. I would have thought 5-10 years for this type of variant. Maybe because it was lab made or maybe because of the high viral load and infection rate the evolution was faster. Maybe this is how coronavirus behaves or maybe I was just mistaken.

This is almost as crazy as the news of the original virus, but much less scary.

BTW, there is an omicron specific Vx ready to go if the FDA grants emergency use authorization. First doses to the public in late February.
