  • So does that mean they could pull the plug on his freshman year and do surgery immediately to give him time to rehab and work on his strength. Or let him play, have surgery, and redshirt him next year. Inquiring minds want to know. I know these questions will only be answered by AR, his family and some input by the staff.

Or is it bad enough that there's no way in hell he could play regardless of what game it was? I wonder is @ARShocker is still around and could shed any light on it.
I think Austin would play through it if they allowed him. I believe @ARShocker: had said that Austin dislocated his shoulder in his sleep during HS then popped it back in and played that evening in a HS Game.

      • But if he doesn't play, then we get to count all games as wins.

          Excellent point.

          • He could have surgery in April, be rehabbing in May and lifting in July. If he can play this year without risk of permanent injury he will and should.

Coach did not say he needs surgery quite yet, just that he's likely going to need it again in the future. I think everyone is in evaluation mode right now. Let's see if we can get him back on the court and then evaluate his long term needs if we can get him though this season.

Is this the Syracuse/Dook Losses don't really count against you rule?

Yes, I believe on his radio show 3G did say something about seeing if they could get Austin through the season. Which implies he will be back but will have everyone holding their breath every now and then.

                    • On the other hand, if he is going to need surgery, why not go ahead and have it done now and have 6-7 months to recover and bulk up for next season?

We will need him to play if he is healthy enough. Otherwise CF & LS will need to play 35+ minutes a game the way DS is playing.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

Signs of life from DS tonight. Had a big bucket and played some solid defense.

Now it seems like we need to locate Willis.

DS ended up playing 10 minutes and looked a little better. You are right, though, DS needs to be playing 20 without Reaves in the lineup.

                            • So, I'm a doc, but not an ortho sugeon. I can talk about the shoulder, but not expertly on any surgery. The shoulder is not a true "ball in a socket" joint. What holds it in place is a series of ligaments (think bungee cords; some stretch, pulls things back into place, but no real "strength"), muscles and tendons, which CAN be strengthened, and a cartilage lip. Treatment depends on which structure they think isn't working; ligaments torn need repair (the so called rotator cuff tear repair), muscle tendons can be strengthened with training, if they're not torn, and the lip can be repaired if it is torn. My educated guess is nothing is specifically torn, or not torn too badly (lip) or they'd have him in surgery today.

I think, but am not totally sure, that his prior two surgeries were to repair torn Labrums. Isn't that the cartilage lip you mentioned? Whether that is the issue this time who knows.
