Because of that, it makes me think there's no real benefit. I assume it's just a way to hype the tournament. The NCAA or ESPN can say "WSU was contacted to learn their preference in location. They are in the hunt for the overall number one seed!" "KU wasn't contacted, but that makes sense because they're headed to the NIT" that kind of thing.
