  • I wonder if this will have any bearing on us; the three big schools in Kansas have all played Oklahoma State; we're the only team to lose. Or do you think the loss will be far enough back that it won't matter much?

      RPI - 38
      KP - 29

2016-2017 WSU (29-5) (Estimated assuming win next 14 then lose to ISUr in Finals)
      RPI - low 30s
      KP - 20s

Yes, the resumes above are very similar (slight edge to WSU), but the selection committee chair was quoted last March as saying that St. Mary's "didn't test themselves" in the non-con. Looking back, the Gaels played just 1 non-con game against a team that made the NCAA's, and none that made the NIT. Their 2nd best non-con opponent was UC Irvine, who made the CIT. This year, WSU has Louisville, Michigan State, Oklahoma St, and Oklahoma. Regardless of how those teams finish here on out, that's a better group of non-con opponents than what St. Mary's put together last year.

I think the 2015-2016 St. Mary's resume gets a team a bid more than 50% of the time. Tough luck for them last year. I think 29-5 WSU this year would look even better and would be a lock to get in.
As you are someone who always advocates that you can just take numbers straight off the top, would our resume at 29-5 actually be considered better than St. Mary's last year? They were 6-3 against the top 100, with 2 losses to 135. Either way, it sounds like we are bound to be sweating out Selection Sunday even under the best case scenario, baring St. Louis.

      • I want to start a new streak of 30 win seasons. I also want the new streak to start on a Sunday in St. Louis.

That, at best, can only be 2... :)

Actually, Reaper, considering all the local skepticism about WSU's NCAA prospects and that Lunardi now shows the Jailbirds as the Valley's autobid, having WSU be that close to an at-large spot is somewhat encouraging. Not much margin for error, but if they successfully observe JH4P's rule, by the end of the season they'll probably be in once again and ready to scare some people.

              • Seeing as how our SOS, RPI, and qualitiy wins (all things the committee holds highly) are all crap, I actually feel pretty good Lunardi has us as a borderline tourney team. I would say winning out the regular season and losing to Ill St. in the finals of Arch Madness probably gets us in, but I honestly don't know... Right now, besides Ill St., the next best opponent the shockers have to face is #140 Loyola...

Your point is well taken. I just think that St. Mary's would have been dancing if they didn't schedule so poorly. The committee specifically called them out on that very thing. WSU won't have that problem, and I think WSU's resume would be at least St. Mary's equal.

                        You act surprised.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

                        • We'll be on the outside looking in for nearly all projections unless and until we beat the Redbirds in the return match on February 4. Same goes for receiving votes in the AP or Coaches poll - nothing doing til then.

No objection here. We have to prove ourselves against a good team.

                          • We could probably beat every team by 30 from here on out and still be in the 11-12 seed range.

                            AAC, wherefore art thou?

                            • Beat them 2/4 and run the table until the finals in STL - we
could probably stand a loss then and still barely make it

Can't ignore the other games that were played. Marquette pulled off a top 20 road win. WSU beat a pushover, at home. It would be silly to think Lunardi should give those wins equal weight.
