It is always amazing to me the number of people that make the comments "out-coached" after a loss.

It was a very ugly way to lose. We only made one basket in the last 9 minutes and we left 4 timeouts unused. It would have been nice if we could have played a little better in the final four minutes but it didn't work out.

The coach tells the offense what to do. The offense couldn't hit the broad side of a barn but a lot of it was based on last second desperation heaves, chuck up 3 pointers, and the inability to maneuver the zone. The players have to play. It's the coach's job to kick them into gear.

The offense looked like garbage. You can't shoot 50% all year, but you can get better looks for your shots. If I were the coach, I would have sat a few individuals down with the way they were "valuing" the basketball and playing with it. But, he didn't.

Had he done that we could only play about three guys? We were struggling enough with five on the court...

I'm sure most casual observer coaches may think they could do better or wonder "why he didn't try this." "Man, we were just outcoached." Coaches make adjustments, and we may not always recognize them. If the players fail to execute most everything you try to do on a given night, nothing will work. Sometimes it is just "one of those nights."

We could not hit the broad side of a barn tonight with our shooting; well, I guess we probably could hit the barn - just not a door or window going into the barn.
We were out rebounded - never happens. We did not just "not coach" rebounding tonight.

Regroup. Saturday will not be any easier.

Zone will be the book on us until we can prove that we DON'T have to depend on the 3 ball to break it. Need to slash/dash/slice/dice up the zone as well. I didn't think we zipped the ball around the perimeter all that well either, letting them close on perimeter shooters, then when we did try to go inside they sagged back pretty quickly. I hope this leaves a bad taste in their mouths for about the eight weeks or so.

1. I thought Coach Marshall got out coached tonight.

2. We had zero answers for the Trees zone defense.

3. I thought Fred played well and may have been the best player on the floor for the Shockers.

4. Our best three ball shooter shot zero 3 ball attempts. He is our zone buster. We have to figger out ways to get him some shots on goal to borrow a hockey expression.

5. While Odum is a pretty good player, I am not in love with him like most folks. Actually he is not very strong.

5. The Trees benefitted from some breaks on roll around the rim balls in the first half plus one out of the @ss shot. Nevertheless, the trees kicked our butts.

6. In scrums under the basket, we came out on the short end too many times. It doesn't seem possible that Carl only shot two free throws and had zero field goals.

7. I know we lost by 13, but I can rationalized away about 10 of those points. It was one of those nights.

Nobody on this board wouldn't have taken 19-3 in a heartbeat. We're still playing for seeding at this point.

Marshall and his staff would have taken it, too. Obviously, once they reached 19-2, they'd rather not have taken 19-3. But still, for a team that lost its five top scorers from last season and then three of this year's starters to injury (only one of whom is back, and clearly not playing the way he was before) to be threatening school records for best start, home winning streak, etc., is pretty amazing and entirely satisfactory. No need to panic over one loss to a top-50 RPI team and overlook that achievement.

Indiana State has been getting some respect on ESPN. During his chat the other day Myron Medcalf was very complimentary of WSU but also said great things about In State and to "watch out" for Indiana State at WSU.

Yes, losing to ISUB is respectable. But only respectable to us MVC fans. An outsider looking in or somebody scanning the bottomline on ESPN who is a voter sees that we lost to someone named Indiana State at home who is unranked. There's no way that they know they're top 50 RPI. Hopefully there are some level headed pundits out there who think otherwise. I know ISUB is good. However, the ones who actually matter are too dumb to realize it.

Welp, then I guess Miami and Ole Miss are in trouble.

I'll agree with you there, but do we with 8 losses (maximum I see us losing the rest of the year, hope it is a lot less) get in?

I don't know anything about how teams with similar resumes have been seeded/selected in recent years.

wsushox1, that's just stupid, and you're on a roll worthy of Ron and Dennis. Why don't you take your Prozac, turn off your computer, and refrain from embarrassing yourself any further? Plus, you're infecting ShoxRox -- maybe you're Ron and he's Dennis? --who's sounding like a buffoon about Williams on a night when Armstead went 2-11 (1-10 when it mattered) and 1-8 from three, plus three turnovers that may have given away enough points to offset his entire offensive output.

A lot of guys were bad tonight. Armstead was awful, Hall was bad, Orupke was bad, others were non-factors. Early did some useful stuff, Cotton and Van Vleet were better than the rest but hardly perfect. But when you can't put the ball in the basket AT ALL -- note to the geniuses who are mad at Marshall for all the threes: the Shocks were worse inside the arc (7-31[!], which is hard to do) than outside (9-28) -- you have to defend, rebound, and make all the hustle plays, and tonight they didn't. But it's still only one game, and it's over and done with, so the task for WSU now is just to isolate it and make sure InSt doesn't beat them twice the way Creighton let the Shocks beat them twice.

Going to be a tough one at UNI. They're a pretty desperate team now having lost tonight. They're a totally different team at the McLeod and it's definitely a game we could drop. Need to get some extra shots up this week and get prepared for UNI. Anybody making the trip to Cedar Falls? I will be there with 3 others wearing our Shocker yellow! I guess we'll somewhat fit in with the yellow.

Still, a real tough loss tonight considering it was at home. It's hard watching so many missed shots & Carl Hall not play up to standard. Have to keep pace with CU now that they get two home games against MSU and Bradley... Never know though. Anything can happen to the BJs.

Boy, that was Stinker with a capital S. I guess if you going to lose you may as well have an implosion and, hopefully, get that out of the way. Not sure I have the stamina to read through the entire game thread. Maybe best if I didn't.

Got to give Indiana State credit. They played well and they played hard and they played smart and they deserved to win this game. Pretty much out-played and out-coached the Shocks in just about every phase of the game.

Hopefully, the Shocks will re-group and come back strong Saturday in Cedar Falls.
