We got a ten seed because we had a poor non-con. Put that WSU team in a better conference and they never string enough wins together to get a bid.

You make the mistake of thinking the roster, coaches and all other attributes wouldn’t have changed if we stayed in the MVC.

the most dominant period of WSU basketball 100% correlated with the period of time where WSU had:

      1) the most $$$ in their conference
      2) most fan support
      3) best coach

1 and 2 are hard to control…. Number three is controllable.

we chose to give up 1 & 2… the results have been mixed at best

This is not correct. Literally every analytics you would look at would disagree. Those WSU teams needed more high quality games, not less.

Our Tournament performance also shows it to be inaccurate.

        • Good gracious. There are actually people who still think we should have stayed in that dump of a conference the valley?

            • Lack of getting to the dance has nothing to do with moving to AAC and everything to do with loosing a coach that had made a name for himself and WSU. Kids want to be groomed and developed for the NBA, and they knew 3G had that track record as well as building winners. Then we got IB with no track record and had to recruit with the WSU brand only. Player development hit a giant pothole as well. Then to top it off, the COVID year affected butts in the seats negatively followed by poor team play to the point the games weren't as much fun for the fans. And the kids want to play in a full house.

So several factors have created the cliff dive. Hopefully HCPM has a good rope to pull us back up.

              • Are we the only fanbase that seriously has people wanting to move lower in conferences, which is what zero school administrators have ever wanted to do?

                • The "we should have stayed in the MVC" crew are quick to forget our atrocious record at winning the MVC tournament. And in today's world, an at large from the Valley ain't happening.

How dare you remind me of this ineptitude! I had just finished therapy from being so pissed off on all of those westward drives on I-70.

From 2003-17 (15 years), WSU had played in the Arch Madness semifinals 12 times. Pretty good. Unfortunately, the semfinal round was such a bugaboo, with WSU having a horrid 4-8 record in that round. The Shockers were 2-2 in the finals. So 12 years...all of those being NIT-minimum worthy seasons, and the Shockers could only cut down nets twice. And in both of those years where WSU won, the pissed off westward drive would come two weeks later at the hands of Calipari's crew (2014 also in STL and 2017 in Indianapolis).

We had a good coach and good teams. It didn't go well in the 90's although the MVC is a "shell" of itself, even from 10-15 years ago when Wichita, Creighton, and Bradley had programs and teams that were respectable. Now, it's not much better than the Big South.

The "Valley of Death" of the 60's and 80's is long gone.

As I once discussed with 3G himself early in his tenure here, not just "winning the MVC tournament" but simply advancing.

How many finals did we make? Check out this dismal record:

'77 1-1 Hosted the entire tournament.
                        '78 0-1
'79 1-1 (campus sites) won at home, lost at NMSU
                        '80 1-1
'81 2-1 lost in the finals at home
'82 ineligible (would have been #2 seed)
'83 ineligible (would have been #1 seed)
'84 1-1 (campus sites) won at home lost at Tulsa
                        '85 3-0 (2 home at Tulsa) 2nd final 1st title
                        '86 0-1
                        '87 3-0 3rd final 2nd title
'88 1-1 (Bradley hosted) lost to worse seed ISU
'89 0-1 (hosted) lost to 7 seed (here comes the hammer)
'90 0-1 lost as the 6 seed, last tourney on campus sites
'91 0-1 First tourney in St. Louis 6 seed

                        '93 0-1 6 seed
                        '94 0-1 7 seed
                        '95 0-1 8 seed
                        '96 0-0 didn't make the ****ing tournament
'97 0-1 7 seed lost playin game to 10 seed
                        '98 1-1 4 seed 1st win in St Louis in year 8
'99 1-1 8 seed won play in game
'00 1-1 9 seed won play in game

'03 1-1 3 seed For those keeping track, 13 tournaments in St Louis and now 2 total wins in the non participation rounds
                        '04 1-1 3 seed
                        '05 1-1 2 seed
                        '06 1-1 1 seed
                        '07 0-1 6 seed
'08 0-1 9 seed lost in the play in round 3G tossed
'09 1-1 7 seed won play in round 19 tournaments 5 wins in the regular draw, total, in St Louis
'10 2-1 2 seed lost in the finals to UNI
'11 1-1 2 seed lost in semis to #3 ISUb
'12 1-1 1 seed lost in semis to #4 ISUr
'13 2-1 2 seed lost in finals to #1 CU
                        '14 3-0 1 seed 3rd title 1st in St Louis 1st in 27 seasons
'15 1-1 1 seed lost in semis to #4 ISUr
'16 1-1 1 seed lost in semis to #4 UNI
'17 3-0 2 seed 4th title and at least we went out on a high note

35-34 and missed 3 tournaments. 14-6 since '10 which means 21-28 from inception through '09 I bet MVSU isn't that bad.

Correction: WSU won 2 games, but the Valley of Fairness still let sCUm play the semifinal game to keep its feeble NCAA hopes alive and so that the ridiculous Blue Crew types would continue to spend Daddy's money in the Gateway City for at least another night.

They didn't advance past that Friday, which is Doc's point.
