He might want to get that first $400k up front in a cashiers check. As with everything Miami - that "company" seems shady and the owner/representative is a snake. We'll probably find out it is a ponzi scheme or money laundering.

        • Reading that article, it looks like Boatright ignored the lessons of game theory. While WSU would be better off if everybody took a hands off approach to NIL, there are way too many schools (including our friends in Lawrence) that you know were going to be more than eager to stab other schools in the back to gain advantage for that to ever work.

          • So basically ADDB thought everyone was going to play by the rules as written and now he’s shocked schools aren’t? Come on, man. Sounds like he needs a history lesson.

University president Rick Muma told The Eagle in March that WSU “embarked on a comprehensive market study and a review of comparable athletic director contracts from other universities to assist with negotiating the now-existing contract.” From that study, it was determined that the athletic director at WSU should be making $275,000.
“It’s frustrating, but I own that because that’s the way it is,” Boatright said. “But if there are going to be no regulations, I can own that too. “When you are a part of a governing body that tells you, ‘This is not pay-for-play’ and to stay away from that, you trust the governing body. But that’s not where we are. Now we have to adjust and make sure we get competitively on the same playing field. It is very much frustrating that the things that they spent time on warning us about is exactly what is going on now.”
“I think what can get our fans excited is something new. Everybody likes something new. Well, (the NIL age) is something new. Let’s see how we can adapt and turn this into something positive for our institution.”
Something we'll need new: a top 40 NIL collective in order to remain relevant. What's that, $1-2M in payouts to the team per year? That could have covered the expenses of a low-level D1 football team.

                • You know what doesn’t excite me? Replacing 9/10 players every year.

If WSU is going to do that, they damn sure better be losing those players to the NBA and not to the NCSU’s and Marquette’s of the world.

                  • What the heck was that article. Did he just openly admit he's going to break rules? instead of doing what every other good AD did and get them set up appropriately ahead of time so the NIL can be funded hands off from the university where it's WAY less likely to draw the eye of the NCAA? Lets face it .... if the NCAA is going to make an example of a school .. it's going to be a WSU not a Miami or a KU.

Don't get me wrong, at this point we need to do what it takes, but something about how that whole interview was answered just rubbed me the wrong way about how he's seeing this and speaking to it. Let's do it and do it smart like the rest of these teams .. not blatantly advertising we are going to set something up to break rules.

                    • Made it sound like WSU was morally superior, because they didn’t help work to setup NIL deals collectively with business and donors.

I guess they can sleep well knowing they did “the right thing” while the program sinks into oblivion.

                      • NCAA needs to pull back the free transfer rule. It is a major problem. Give the kids 1 transfer with a 1 year sit. Not that hard to do and I'm sure coaches would be for it.
I guess DB wasn't reading all the articles about collectives forming in Austin, TX and other places with high profile schools. It was not a secret. The Fed Ex deal with Memphis players was reported long ago. I guess his head was buried if he was caught off guard.

He's definitely admitting he missed the ball. The ball being a willingness to cheat. It's a tough call. Smart answer though.

I do like the fact that he says we will start cheating though.

What DB did was say, effectively, "I dropped the ball and it's the NCAA's fault." That's not really owning anything. Either OWN it or don't. He made a decision to take a conservative approach and it was the wrong decision. Just say that and talk about how we're going to fix this mess. Don't give dumb excuses for making the wrong decision, and then provide some condescending assurance about how people like new and exciting and NIL is new and exciting.

I don't like new, Darron. I like AD's who are proactive, aware of what's going on around them, and don't let their breadwinning programs slide into oblivion.

First new thing that will get us excited is a new AD.
