  • KU in the B1G would get a full revenue split from FB while providing nothing of value to any potential contracts. That means the other schools would be earning money they would have to share with KU. KU brings in NCAA units, but is that enough to offset their absolute lack of any value in FB revenue?

If Texas keeps up their attitude of superiority and expectation of being able to call the shots in the conference, they might find themselves left out. It's possible no conference would want Texas with their reputation for causing probloems.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

You are right. Texas has a lot of warts that have been exposed. Texas brought to the Big 12 a lot of hat, no cattle, and a pompous attitude. Texas created the whole realignment fiasco in the first place, then formed their own money hoarding network. If ESPN could dump the Longhorn Network, maybe a few broadcasters would still have jobs.

As for KU, outside of their three natty's in basketball, their resume includes a mere five matty's in all other sports. If youre going after a basketball school with history, why not poach UConn? Grab WVA as well. Kick Michigan and Michigan State to the west, guarantee one cross division rivalry game and you've fixed everything.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

You mean Texas had to sell their cows like another school did a few years ago?

No. If we grossly inflate the value of each unit to $3,000,000 and assume that Kansas goes to the national championship game every year, they would bring in $15,000,000 annually, divided 16 ways, minus the cut the conference takes. Kansas would bring less than a million per school while being a drag on football, the big revenue generator.

            • In reading some opinions on the AAC board, there is a worst-case scenario for WSU if massive realignment occurs again to reach a P4 outcome. If 3 or more B12 teams are left (pick any of Baylor, TTech, KSU, KU, TCU, ISU, WVU), the conference doesn't have to dissolve. They can then pick the best or most regional of the AAC and MWC to fill back out to a full conference. That's when The American loses Cinci, Memphis, SMU, Houston and possibly UConn. The conference would be gutted of it's basketball appeal, leaving only WSU, Temple, Tulsa and maybe UCF.

                  • One thing we are all assuming is that the contract dollars will continue to go up.
That is no guarantee. ESPN just let go a lot of people. They overpaid to get contracts last time.

The big question is will Disney mandate to ESPN to get better contracts and cut the amount of money
                    they pay for Football?

If they cut the money paid out by 15%, that might derail any more expansion.

I am guessing we will see either of 1 of 2 things happen:

                      A. Disney sells ESPN (revenue goes down)
                      B. Apple buys Disney (revenue goes up because Apple is flush with money and wants to crush competition)

IMO should a worse case scenario unfold regards the Big 12; most likely candidates available to form a new conference or join The American and MWC are KU, K State, TCU and Baylor. Very unlikely they could form a new conference that could negotiate a valuable football media rights package. Could they form a new conference that would be more competitive in MBB's than the existing American, that is the question IMO that should be answered.

Kansas would be a good addition to The American Conference. If they joined, anyone on this board think they would dominate league MBB championships as they have in the Big 12?

                          Of course they would.

The Big 12 is the greatest collection of basketball the world has ever seen.

                          • The thing that makes me happy right now is that it does seem very much like the American leadership has high aspirations and is actively trying to establish the conference at the top level. It has the feel of a growing conference. They have a clear goal, and I think they will achieve it. We are in the right place.

                            • If KU and/or K-State ends up in the same conference as Wichita State in the future, I will have a nice, long laugh.

Except that the B1G has their own network, as does the pac 12. 49% of the B1G is owned by Fox, while the Pac 12 owns the network outright. FS1 signed a deal with the B1G and is looking to grab programming anywhere ESPN leaves an opening. ESPN shrinking isn't the only thing in play.

ABC and CBS play prominently, so it's way too early to believe that the well has run dry. As technology grows, as do options outside of cable, we have no idea where the revenue streams will be created or dry up.

My guess is ESPN will cave and lower carriage fees in exchange for selling its content as a standalone streaming product. That way, they minimize their bleeding from cable companies that are dropping them because they are too expensive, while selling their content to cable cutters that would willingly pay a minimal fee to stream.
