    • Does this mean Blake has been awarded another four years, too?

      • I love the fact that this news was posted in the realignment thread rather than the around the NCAA thread or an mvc thread of some kind. It is much more relevant here in this one I think

        • MSU fires Hinson because he can't get them into the NCAA tourney with a 24 rpi. Then wins the MVC one year with Hinson's recruits, still doesn't make the NCAA's, loses that coach and then becomes a perennial Thursday night team.

Evansville gives Simmons an extension because he was able to get them into some tournament that starts with a "C".

          • We do realize that not every school as it as good as us, right? Marty Simmons isn't exactly John Wooden, but what's the alternative? Fire the guy and take a chance on someone whose performance is unpredictable? Can't blame UE for extending him. They know what they're getting. Not every school can get a Gregg Marshall. Important to understand if a risk is worth it.

Yes, but the reason it belongs in this thread is to emphasize that schools in our conference have no ambition (or money, call it what you will) to do better. It highlights an already known fact - that the MVC is going nowhere.

It's absolutely that they don't have the resources to go to the next level. They only have the resources to be average. That's discouraging.

Which is also why posting that news tidbit in this thread is perfect on several levels.

This is exactly wrong. You know what you have with Simmons. And it sucks. What's the risk? Finishing 9th instead of 7th? Having a .420 record instead of a .480 record? If the goal isn't to TRY improving (which is my belief), then I was right to post the link in this thread, because they shouldn't be in the league.

If you hire a crappy coach after Simmons, then you get rid of him in 4 years and try again. And you're literally no worse off. But eventually, you might hit. Maybe the 1st time. Maybe the 5th time. But eventually you might hit.

Not everyone is as fortunate as WSU, or can get Gregg Marshall.

But lots of schools are as fortunate as Winthrop, and they did get Gregg Marshall.

Evansville's finishes the last six seasons:

                              2016 - 2nd
                              2015 - 5th

                              2013 - 4th
                              2012 - 4th
                              2011 - 6th

Now, granted, they had some terrible years before that. But it's not like they're a perennial Bradley or Missouri State.

And yet, Missouri State and Bradley have a conference championship and a Sweet 16 between them in the last 11 years. Apparently trying can get you something. Maybe some worse years, but maybe also some better years.

Even those last "good" years under Marty, they have a .569 win % against D1 competition (and even that includes 8 CIT wins against marginal competition), with an average NonCon SOS of 271, including 313 and 312 the last 2 years, when everyone knew they were going to be decent/good.
