  • If the Big East would swallow some pride and add a non-Private school, (or somehow find an exception where WSU wouldn't have to report revenue for BE affiliated activities) the BE would be perfect.

It might be tough without football, but with football the MWC and AAC would obviously be great. If Cinni and UCONN stuck around, I might give the nod to the AAC. Though, the conference tourney in Vegas is a big selling point for the MWC!

Just talks about funding woes with respect to state support of SIU (and all Illinois public universities). Doesn't really have much to do with WSU or realignment, except to reinforce that we need to get out of the MVC before the balance of its athletics departments are ran by a bankruptcy trustee.

          Very sad article......

          • The A10 or Big East would suck because we would no longer have a relationship with ESPN. Big East money might be enough to offset that, A10 money certainly isn't. If we were to go to the AAC even our garbage game @ Tulane for example would probably be on ESPNNews which probably gets as good rating as FS1 or NBCSN.

Unless I've misunderstood the MVC's deal with ESPN, $1 would more than offset whatever money WSU gets from them.

Money perhaps, exposure not so much.

Little bit of throw-up-in-my-mouth type moment here, as I'm going to sorta defend the BE, but BE schools each get roughly $4M per year for twelve years from the Fox Sports contract. We get jack s**t with whatever lame contract we and/or the other Elgin-ville residents have with CBS and ESPN.

As @ShockerEngr: said, we don't know the dollar amount in exposure that ESPN gets us. Being on ESPN a few times a year getting 10x the viewers that FS1 does is certainly worth something, I just don't know what. It's probably not worth $4 million a year, but I'm betting it's worth more than whatever NBC and CBS give the A10.

                        • Anyone who says they don't want in the BE is crazy. However, an invite is a pipe dream. My question is what are the drawbacks of jumping to a new conference? Do you have to make a commitment of some sort? I know Butler was only in the A10 for a year before going to the BE. Essentially, if we went to the A10 but got a better offer the next year, for some reason, would joining the A10 cause problems?

I agree with this, other than with a "Meh" to the MWC. For whatever reasons that I cannot answer, I like the west part of the country better than the east (even though I have only been west of Denver five times or so). That said, I also don't like the thought of watching Shocker road games on TV at 9pm or later. So I personally wouldn't necessarily be opposed to the MWC, but I agree with you that the AAC or Big East would be better for WSU.

                              • I'm living on the east coast right now and the idea of Shocker games beginning at 10 PM EST or possibly later is just a deal breaker to me. Since we started living on the east coast, I couldn't tell you the last time I watched a west coast sporting event. It's not that I don't want to, they're just on too late, especially on weeknights. It would be a bad move for WSU to go west, IMO. Go east or don't go anywhere.
