Is that when he is slated to get his GED?

    • I'm just going to take this moment to offer the friendly reminder that we traded Teddy Hawkins for either Cle Early, Derail Green, Team Canada, Darius Carter, etc.

I don't know exactly which one(s) line up directly in that situation, but good grief... I'm happy with what we have instead.

I'm not sure why December, but academics are why he'll have to sit out according to them. Which that should surprise nobody. It's possible that the NCAA will allow him to enroll and take classes but not participate until he meets certain standards. KU had to do that with one of their guys recently. This would also prevent him from practicing with the team I believe this season. Or at least the first semester. Perhaps he shows enough progress during the first semester that he then becomes eligible to practice and that's when his "clock" starts and that could be why it'd be December of '14.

We've known this kid to have academic issues for awhile. Someone over there also said that the reason he left his prep school at semester was because they didn't extend his scholarship for the 2nd semester so he went home.

            • It just deems weird that it would be a year and a half. The prop 7(?) Athletes usually only sit out one academic year.

I'm not certain it even applies or how it works if it does apply, but athletes now have to be "on schedule" with academic progress toward a degree. I believe there is a percentage schedule and maybe this could be the reason.

                NCAA ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
                SATISFACTORY PROGRESS TOWARD DEGREE
                Entering Second Year of Enrollment:
                24 credits
18 credits earned during academic year
                6 hours per term
                1.8 GPA

                Entering Third Year of Enrollment:
                40% of degree (48 hours)
18 credits earned during academic year
                6 credits per term
                1.9 GPA
                Must declare a degree program

                Entering Fourth Year of Enrollment:
                60% of degree (72 hours)
18 credits earned during academic year
                6 credits per term
                2.0 GPA

                Entering Fifth Year of Enrollment:
                80% of degree (96 hours)
18 credits earned during academic year
                6 credits per term
                2.0 GPA

                Transfers:

A midyear transfer must meet requirements above and may use any
degree credits to satisfy these requirements.

A transfer who initially enrolls as a full-time
student in any collegiate institution’s regular
academic term on or after August 1, 2003 is subject
to the above requirements for the year that he
                or she is entering.
                Part-Time Enrollment:

A student-athlete must earn 18 credits in any academic year in which the
                SA was full-time during
one or more terms. Part-time hours may be used to fulfill requirement.

                Exception
: A student-athlete who enrolls in his or her first full-time term following the fall term
will not be responsible for earning 18 credit hours until he or she
has spent one full academic year at the institution.

                Averaging Method:

No longer used for determining eligibility.
                Summer Credit Hours:

Summer hours may be used to satisfy the progress
toward degree requirements at the end of each
                academic year.

                • It isn't just a question of who WSU brought in to fill Teddy's spot when he flamed out.

With the Shocks' new and improved coaching staff -- after all, Jans and Heiar aren't exactly shutting down just because Forbes is coming to town -- imagine what kind of talent the Shockers will have on board by the time Hawkins ever becomes eligible at IlSt. Teddy may turn out to be a fine player; he obviously has big-time ability (in baseball, he'd be one of those guys the old-timers say has a million-dollar arm and a ten-cent head) But the spots on WSU's roster for forwards will no doubt be filled very nicely indeed at that point.

I don't disagree, but they are also different positions. I believe Hawkins is more of a PF and Brown is a SF.

Ah, I see. ESPN had Hawkins as a SF. That's what I get for double checking only one source.

It's possible he could develop into one. I think that we saw him as more of a stretch 4 type. His range, if I remember correctly, was OK, but nothing great. Same with his handles. But he's a good athlete that can put on some weight and bang.

I remember some talks trying to compare him to Green. Green is about the same height, maybe a tad taller, but doesn't have the build to play inside like Hawkins does. Plus, Green is a MUCH better shooter and I believe ballhandler. Expect him to be more of a SF in time but I saw some recruiting sites at one point listing him as a SG.

Basically, it's guess work by the services as to where he will play. If Hawkins does become a SF, I'd say he's currently a different type than Brown. Both are athletic, but Brown has a much more developed all around game.

And then again, Muller may see him differently than what Marshall did.

                          • Muller seems to see a number of things differently than Marshall does, and I for one am delighted -- more than delighted, in fact -- to be on Marshall's side of the divide.

                            • I'm not sure where that comes from. I'd take Marshall everyday over Muller, but don't understand some of the hostility towards the young coach. Even reading the ISU board, they sound as though Muller is looking at WSU as the blueprint to build a program that can compete nationally and I think he has the recruiters to attempt it. If Hawkins can get eligible, he could go quite a ways in helping them achieve that as well. Time will tell. I'd say the same thing about Ford at Bradley. Only difference is he has more experience and has built a program elsewhere.

I'd love to see both find some success and help lift the conference and help us over time. Playing and beating stronger teams in conference is only a good thing that ends up helping rankings/seedings. Plus, it'll make the style of play inside the MVC even better as I know those two want to get to the point where they can get up and down the court as well and not play like UNI or UE.

                              • Glad to see the post turtle still up there, im4.

Upon reading your text, though, I don't see why it would apply. If Hawkins attends IlSt coming from a prep school (or having dropped out of one), isn't he just in his first year? If so, it would seem that he'd be subject to whatever INITIAL eligibility standards apply (i.e., being "cleared" to enroll and participate), rather than rules governing satisfactory progress.

Either way, it's hard to imagine that a guy who didn't qualify initially and then bounced along through one semester of prep school before leaving would now be eligible to step right in and play.
