      • Didn't see this posted elsewhere, but the Illinois State board is reporting that Hawkins is working on enrolling there and will officially join the Redbirds soon.

        • The work of Dana Ford, to be sure.

          • Didn't complete his year at Quakerdale and had some problems with the coach iirc at his Dayton prep school. With his history, he sounds like a gem of a person. If he's eligible, ISU had to work hard to help him. Maybe he can right the ship (character and academically) with some guidance.

Yep. No question that he is talented, but there are some major red flags about both his long term eligibility and his commitment to hard work on discipline on and off the court. Maybe seeing the offers from BCS schools that he thought he would get never materialize and seeing WSU in the Final Four without him will be enough to jolt him into reality. I certainly hope so, because the Valley needs all the competitive basketball teams in can get and Illinois State is in major need of contributions from newcomers with all they lost.

              • If Muller and Ford can keep him focused and out of trouble, more power to them. I had great hopes for Hawkins when he signed here so it will be interesting to see how he develops compared to Shaq Morris.

                  • This kid could very well end up juco if he has been having problems. Did he stay in school at that prep?

                    • Probably a 50% chance of him becoming a Redbird (after 2 years of Juco).

So, our staff had a legitimate reason to be pissed at ISUr and whats his name (no seriously, I can't remember).

Maybe, but this kid won't pan out, IMHO. He's a classic headcase and won't survive a system outside of Juco.

                          • Not that we need him, but ESPN's Rumor Central confirms today that Hawkins is an ISU Redbird:

"A year ago, Deontae Hawkins was set to attend Wichita State. The forward might have redshirted his freshman season, such was the depth the Shockers possessed in the frontcourt last year, but had he continued with his initial idea of playing for Gregg Marshall and Co., he would see a bounty of playing time in 2013-14. However, Hawkins, a 6-foot-7 forward, decided to attend a prep school and then explore other college options, ultimately following Dana Ford, the assistant who had recruited him to Wichita, to Illinois State.

Hawkins' decision to commit to the Redbirds' program has flown essentially under the radar, but since Dan Muller's frontcourt has been decimated by transfers and players exhausting their eligibilities, Hawkins' contributions will be pivotal in his first Missouri Valley season. There is even a chance Hawkins could see some playing time as a starter; during a recent open gym, the big showed a skill-set that could prove valuable for Muller and Co., and also displayed a frame capable of handling the beefier frontcourts of the MVC."
"If you strive for perfection, often times you can achieve excellence." --Gregg Marshall

                              • I've been on the Redbird board and according to those who claim to have sources say he won't be eligible until December of '14.
