  • I also think Coach knows something we don't, but I do not believe it has anything to do with a player giving up his scholarship. Be here this time next year and we will see what has happened.

Just saying, I don't believe Coach recruits with the idea of running players off, nor do I believe Evan, Ron or anyone else will give up his scholarship next year. I simply believe that the staff is aware of things we are not privy to, as Coach said at the All Access practice.

I'm thrilled to have Teddy and more than willing to just relax and see what happens.

      • Without even getting the LOI from Hawkins, we would have been in the same situation if Ede hadn't left. So when Ede left, HCGM knew he could sign another player. So he knows what is going on.

He gets them to make a decision that impact the rest of their lives and when he finds a player he likes better, they are shown the door. I am anxiously awaiting the multi year letter of intent. At that point, there will be more commitment from the coaches and school towards the student athlete and maybe Marshall will be forced to develop players and not just recruit.
          Multi-year letter of intent?

Do you also advocate giving irrevocable academic scholarships to kids out of high school without any minimum scholastic performance conditions?

The real world is calling and you don't even hear the phone ringing.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

            • I'd like to hear any knowledge of a kid being "run off" since Gregg arrived on campus. Please provide details.

Like it or not, scholarships have been on a year by year basis, and this is big business, but still, please let me know about the kids run out of town the last 4 seasons.

              Thank you

              • I don't like the idea of multi-year scholarships. A player is being "paid" (via scholarship) for playing. If he doesn't fit into the system or doesn't live up to expectations, I don't feel the school should be required to, so to speak, "throw good money after bad." It may seem unfair and harsh to some but who ever said life was fair. Doc is right when he says college basketball (and football) are big business and therefore must be treated as such. It's all academic (no pun intended). If someone gets an academic scholarship but doesn't keep up their grade point average, you think the scholarship committee is going to award that scholarship to the same student the next year. Whether you are on an athletic scholarship or an adademic one, it's all about accountability. If you don't make the grade or if you don't play up to the level for which you were awarded the scholarship, it's going to be taken away. Again, I don't like multi-year scholarships and I would think the coaches would not like them either.

Ever heard of the Gore Scholarship? Its a 4 year scholly given by WSU - 12K a year for 4 years. I guess they figure if you've worked hard enough to earn it out of high school, you'll keep it up in college. Or maybe the assumption of that work ethic only applies to academics, not athletics...

                    • Coach Marshall has not run off any players that I can think of. Those that have left, determined for whatever reason, be that playing time, talent level, required work ethic, required class attendance, homesick, etc. made the decision themselves. I would speculate that if they ask the coaching staff about the any of the above, they get an honest anwser. More players left during the Turgeon and Smithson era.

Johnny Coy is the only example of losing a scholarship that I can think of. Frankly Johnny and Gene gambled and lost, in regard to his scholarship.

You have to maintaing a stringent GPA in order to get that scholarship. It is, in fact, renewed annually based on performance.

Boom goes the dynamite. Also, I received a 4 year engineering scholarship to WSU that required a 3.0 gpa. There always should be accountability.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

                            • Wow, so folks don't like the idea of multi-year letters of intent. You do however like having Marshall signed on for a long term contract. Do you not trust his judgement in his selection of players to have him hand out multi-year scholarships? Yes, I understand that letters of intent have been year by year, but I think the NCAA is onto something good with the multi-year idea.

You want to compare athletic scholarships to academic scholarships. Steelshocker pointed out that his scholarship had a minimum GPA requirement as the floor. Good, that gave him something to shoot for. The criteria to keep his scholarship was defined and it was in his hands. His professors were not the ones out there recruiting new students to the university. He did not have recruiters going to high schools saying this they thought this year's senior is likely to get a better GPA, so we will take his scholarship and give it to the incoming student.

Yes, yes, yes. Marshall has not come out and said that he was pulling a scholarship to hand it to an incoming player or that he wanted someone to leave. He is far to smooth for that, but he is very capable of pushing buttons to get the outcome he wants. So if he wants to replace someone, it is not inconceivable that he would push the right buttons to convince a player that they wanted to leave. This would be the all too common "leaving for personal reasons". I can here the battle cry that they need to have thicker skin than that, but everyone has their breaking point and will decide that someplace else would be better.

Don't get me wrong, I am ecstatic that the Shockers are doing well. My problem is that we are becoming a revolving door program. I do not think that we should litter the highway to national prominence with player road kill. Obvioulsy, there are plenty who feel differently, starting with Marshall.

These are just my thoughts and point of view. I do not expect everyone or maybe even anyone to agree with me, but that's what forums are for.

                              GO SHOCKS!
