On the Coach's show tonight Coach Jans, who was sitting in for 3G, said that Coach Marshall was in Dayton tonight watching Teddy and checking out another player. Obvioulsy he could not say who that was. I don't know if it was another Dunbar player of one of the player's on the opposing team.

IMO for HCGM to go to Dayton at this time, it's Gary Akbar. Akbar verballed to Cleveland State in November but remains unsigned. It's been publicized that the reason for this is to get his academics in order. However, it's also well known that Teddy Hawkins, Akbar, and for that matter Creighton's Andre Yates would like to play together in college. As we all know, Yates did sign with Creighton. This is Yates' first year at Dunbar. Teddy and Gary have been teammates at Dunbar throughout high school.

Akbar led Dunbar in scoring last night with 19. Yates and another Dubar player had 14 in the blow out win. At this time I don't know how many points Teddy had. He came into the game averaging nearly 20 a game thanks to several recent big outings.

Akbar is a 6-4 to 6-5 SF. He verballed to Akron for a short time last summer before giving Cleveland State a verbal. He is probably a much underrated two star by the scouting sites. In the article about last night's game. Dunbar's coach calls him a man among boys at times. I will start a new thread on Akbar where further discussion on him can be done.

Trop--The other day on his coaches show, Marshall mentioned that he was going to see a Junior but couldn't mention his name for obvious reasons.

If it's a junior on Dubar's team it's probably 6-7 Damarion Geter. He had 14 points last night and is a D-1 talent but I don't know much about him. I believe Cleveland State is interested. Dubar played Jefferson who has a unsigned mid major level point guard, but I don't think has anyother D-1 level players at present. Whoever it is, for Marshall to go, there is high interest and probably a decision is being made on offering, or we have already and are trying to impress.

          • Jefferson's unsigned guard is a 2012, you mean?

              • Add in their freshman guard along with Hawkins, Akbar, Yates, and Geter and Dunbar is TRUELY loaded! That is five very quality D-I talents!!!

                • It would either be Akbar or Geter, period. Jeff doesn't have any major D-1 talent. Dunbar blew them away and Teddy was in foul trouble all night (he fouled out early in the 4th Qtr).
Above all, make the right call.

                  • This might have been reported in one of the generic recruiting threads but I like keeping stats attached to the player thread.

Tuesday night (Jan. 3) Hawkins had 29 and 10 in a 69-53 win over Beavercreek. Dunbar remains undefeated.

                      Kids got talent!

Will be "game ready" next year??? With his academic issues I am concerned that he may not grasp HCGMs difficult offense quickly. We'll see.

                      • I'm not sure we can necessarily tie basketball IQ to academic prowess. There are too many differences between the two thought processes as well as how the individual applies himself to each.

I believe big parts of what we call "b-ball IQ" are instinct, anticipation and the ability to recognize or implement a strategy. I don't see that one's grades or test scores tell us much about those traits.

                          Good point.

I'm not sure we can necessarily tie normal IQ to academic prowess.

Although, a demonstrated ability/willingness to work hard at achieving something not immediately obtainable frequently translates between domains.
I think Pringles original intention was to make tennis balls... but on the day the rubber was supposed to show up a truckload of potatoes came. Pringles is a laid-back company, so they just said, "**** it, cut em up!" - MH

Fair enough. I almost didn't post that as I figured that would be the response. It's tough for any freshman to be ready to go 20 minutes per game, and those that are uber-athletic often times have a harder time adjusting as they have always gotten by on their talent (not that they don't work hard). No one can probably answer how ready he'll be, but I'd feel better if someone did.

Who would have thought that Cotton would be getting the minutes he does with a pot load of upperclassmen ahead of him. Hawkins won't be competing with that many D-I experienced upperclassmen. If he has the "b-ball IQ" and the talent, 15-20 minutes is not that out of line, although I expect our underclassmen to have a say in that.
