Honestly, if the rumors about the salary offer from OSU are true, KU will not match them...basically, they can't. Right now without incentives, Self makes around $6.9 million at KU in 5 years. OSU is offering him anywhere from $23.5 to $31 million over his first 5 years without incentives. I can guarantee you KU's offer will not sniff $20 million over 5 years. Of course, the rumors could be completely false and OSU maybe offering significantly less, if that's the case, KU has a very good chance of keeping Self.

Because it's related to men's college basketball and the title of this forum is Men's Basketball... It could have been put under baseball, but I think this is a better fit.

Agreed. The money from OSU will be meaningfully more than what KU will be able to come up with....still Self will be at KU next year as one of the three highest paid coaches in the country.
Or he could go to OSU and be the highest paid coach in the history of the universe!

If you will look at the posts directly above my post, you will see that I was referring to the reference by several posters regarding Self's "rug". I was not questioning why this general thread was here. The thread as a whole is relevant.

My gut feeling based in nothing says Self realizes everywhere else is down from here in College basketball and is off to the Pros.

        Specifically the Oklahoma City team.

Self isn't going to the NBA any time soon. If he did, I think he'd go to San Antonio, where he is best friends with the GM Buford. It's either Okie State or staying at KU for now. The NBA could be down the road, though.

I think Self had a nice discussion with Calipari about the jump to the NBA. You know he has talked to Brown.

In the future, maybe. Right now? Doubtful.

If Memphis hits one more free throw, we would not be having this discussion. Self still has lots to prove at KU.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Help me out here...what exactly does he have to prove?

What current coaches would be better hires for the next 10 years?

KU got somewhat lucky in the tourney.
                  - Self did not have a dominant team in the tourney.
                  - Nice win over UNC but Davidson might have beat UNC as well.
                  - Memphis had the game won but missed a bunch of free throws.
                  - The refs allowed KU to slap the Memphis guards arms & hands and this allowed KU to get steals in the back court.
                  - KU had an easy road to the Final Four and still almost lost to Curry (& Davidson).

In my opinion, Self has lots to prove. He had a good team but not a great team. He coached well and got breaks. Could 2008 KU beat 2007 Florida? No.

Wow, with this critical analysis, I'm not sure WSU should have won the 1989 College World Series, either.

2007 KU beat 2007 Florida. I don't think anyone is arguing that 2007 KU was > 2008 KU.

How many potential NBA players does a 37-3 National Championship team have to have to be considered a great team?

You need a lot of luck to win any kind of a tournament. The good teams tend to get some of the best luck.

As vbird already mentioned, it could be argued that we got lucky to win the 89 title.

No matter how you slice it though, KU and Self won the National Championship. He has nothing more to prove. Sorry..

Kansas donors willing to pay to keep Self

If big bucks are needed to fend off Oklahoma State and keep Bill Self as the Jayhawks' basketball coach, wealthy Kansas donors seem ready to reach for their wallet.

"All Oklahoma State has to offer him is money," Anderson said. "We're going to do our best to make him comfortable in staying. You work out a way to retain great people."

That's not true, Arizona in 1997 beat three #1 seeds on their way to the title. They beat Kansas in the Sweet 16, North Carolina in the Final Four and Kentucky in the Final.
