CF will be the point guard next year. CF steps in for Fred. LS steps in for Ron (can also run some point).Smith plays Conner's roll as 1st guard off the bench. What we need is what we missed with Cotton. Ron had to play that roll and he did every bit the job but he had to work so hard it hurt his shooting.

Unless some kind of lunker comes along, wouldn't you want to keep as much knowledge and experience as possible for next season in particular? Next year should be great once again but it could also be a train wreck. We just don't know. A lot will be changing in the team chemistry now that an entire era of leadership has graduated. Guys who have led the team the entire 4 years they were here just about... As opposed to a crop of seniors who only led the team for a year or two as upper class men. Keeping all hands on deck to make sure we don't stumble hard early on seems smart to me.
Are you then predicting that one of our recruits doesn't show up or either Frankamp or Allen remain a walk-on? I can't see any of our existing scholarship guys giving up a scholly to play ball here.

Does he get another year to see if that will be the year? Maybe he will be like Derail Green who improved a lot after he left.

And then there is Nurger. He's had a few flashes of potential, but he's nowhere near the type of player that Marshall needs to have.
Hamilton was pretty darn efficient at scoring and rebounding per minutes played. No way I let that big body leave unless we have a much better big body coming in.

          Austin could go to Sunrise.

The good thing about Sunrise vs other prep schools is that it is right down the road from WSU. He can still hang out with the players, come to games, be around the coaches. Pretty much be part of the team without having to take a RS.

          • I think you will see some guys be 'totally different' next year. It was no secret this was Fred & Ron's team. Nobody wanted to upset the apple cart... Next year, personalities will really come out. Its going to be fun. Sure, there will be bumps in the road, but looking at our known schedule... The potential to rack up wins is there. I don't think there will be the plethora of 20 point blowouts, but wins will be plenty.

Plus, we are losing 5 guys. I'm sure we will have enough scholarships.
Landry's injury was HUGE!!!! This team would had at least three additional non con wins, one Valley loss max, made the finals of Arch Madness and a minimum S16 banner.

                  • Thinking about the schedule next year. Who is going to be competitive in the MVC? League was very senior dominant this year. UNI & ISUr will be competitive, but anyone else going to do anything? I still see the league as WSUs to lose, by a wide margin.

This. Exactly. No edits or qualifications.

You have to enjoy the ride for the route it takes you on instead of wishing you had a different path and missing the joy of the journey though.

But man did I have to remind myself of that a lot. All of the inefficiencies and frustrations of Fred's absence - and I'm talking about Fred on the bench, not just injured - would have been heavily mitigated by Landry. And I say that with the objective part of my brain, not the part that loves Shocker basketball.

I don't go far enough back to say for sure, but I bet there are some old timers that stare off into the distance and wonder what could have been if Stallworth's eligibility hadn't expired mid-year. I think Landry will be my version of that.

But I'll console myself with the thought of having Landry around for 4 more. In the limited time we saw him I thought he was a better 1 than Fred and a better 2 than Ron in their freshman years.

Sad to see the run end but excited to see what Markis and Landry turn into as they continue it...

UNI is going to be strong at the 3/4/5 next year. ISUr will be very good. SIU will be pretty good. ISUb and MSU have a chance to be decent.

Excellent point... I think what most people fail to recognize was a behind the scenes deal that was made between 3G baker & Fred, they only coming back to be able to help wsu win and to be featured in the offense and defense. Everything ran thru them, and one of them had to be on the court at all times.. Next year it will be really balanced , we could even be as deep as this year, depending on how Frankamp, Allen, Smith & Willis do, that with Shamet, McDuffie, Morris, Brown, Keyser, Reaves, Hamilton, Nurger

                          • This year, we have been weaker at the 3 than last year. Brown did some nice things but he was never as good as Cotton last year. He may have been as effective on defense (not better), but offensively, last year, Cotton was a much better option on offense (both driving the ball to the basket and shooting from 3 point range) than Brown and better than Duff also. There is no doubt that the ceiling on Duff is higher than anyone, but for effectiveness this year, we struggled on offense with the loss of Cotton and Carter.

Next year, we won't be as good at guard as this year, but Landry will be close and Duff will have to pick up a lot of the slack. We will see how much weight Duff can put on and increase his effectiveness both offensively and defensively.

                            • Are we sure SIU is going to be any good? They beat nobody to speak of this year and lose Beane. They have Olaniyan and Smithpeters coming back, but.....they better have some good newcomers.

Nor only needed spark, but between both he and Connor, both Fred and Ron could have gotten much needed breaks. Instead, there had to be a three-player rotation with only one guy getting rest. With the 3 games-in-5 days scenario, both could have benefited from more and longer rests.
