Marshall is the greatest coach we've ever seen here and he is not replaceable. Fred and Ron are the best backcourt duo we've ever had. They, however are replaceable.

Gene Smithson (he left when I was 7 so feel free to correct me) was a great evaluator of talent and knew how to utilize them, but was not a great coach. He also had demons that prevented him from being successful to the level of Nolan Richardson.

well, he was a great coach. he was in the illinois high school hof even while he was at wichita state. probation decimated the most talented team anybody had seen in over a decade (sport magazine 1981), since early ucla. his demons got the better of him, in the end.. not unlike sarkisian (although smithson had national success before that happened). point blank, if wichita state can get a great coach and keep that great coach, a national championship is not out of the question (stubborn/stupid turgeon and fogler ku/unc.. just five more years, you clowns).

I don't know about Gene's ability to evaluate (I'm sure it was fine), but he was a great recruiter. We signedTop 100 players (AC, Cliff, Aubrey, X, Steve Grayer, Karl Papke, Greg Dreiling, Randy Smithson, Mike Jones, and Ozell Jones, who was a Top 6 Center). WSU was also a finalist for many other Top 100 players but we lost out to Illinois, Louisville, Georgetown, etc.). Sasha Radunovich was a great player who was a 6'10 forward from Yugoslavia.

Agree with 76- every program is dependent on keeping their coach.

Regardless of whether Seth the dumbass is telling the truth, that was just a hate filled and motivated article. He basically can't wait for the "mid major" to go away.

Marshall is the greatest WSU coach and probably will go down that way, but the team is still capable of getting a good coach if he ever does leave. Just won't be AS good. Same with players after Fred/Ron.

all of that, and you didn't even mention that wichita state signed the chicago and los angeles players of the year in the same season.. while the shockers were on probation! could you imagine if wichita state signed the chicago or los angeles poy today (one or the other, never mind both in the same season)?! the publicity?

but marshall is so good that he doesn't have to sign the chicago poy (yogi ferrell).. we'll take van vleet. or the los angeles poy (whoever that was).. we'll take morris. hcgm will make the most of it.

Turgeon's salary here wasn't anywhere NEAR worth staying for, relative to the opportunities elsewhere. It was a different time and circumstance. I don't think you can call his decision stupid. I think it was an easy decision for him.

You're right - it was an easy decision for him, but not for the reasons you've offered. He knew WSU was going to have a very down year and he got out before he got exposed for his inability to sign quality players "at this level".

It's taken Turgeon from when he left here until this year to be relevant. Didn't he hire the #1 recruiter of the Maryland/DC area away from KSU? turgeon is not a great recruiter. He needs assistants who can cover recruiting.

There's truth to that too. They aren't mutually exclusive. He was going to have two down years IMO. But he DID sign the guys that got us to the S16.

IMO his stint at A&M was somewhat successful and relevant nationally.

When I hire a manager, I want a guy who knows what his weaknesses are and knows how to hire supporting personnel that can turn his weakness into a strength. Hiring a stud recruiter with deep ties to your immediate area seems like a very intelligent move, not one that he should be shamed for.
