The fundamentals on this team are just so bad, When’s the last time you saw Q do a hard post up? Never. He doesn’t know how. We don’t box out, we don’t get low and guard with our legs, hands up in faces. We make one handed passes, we dribble into double and triple teams and then force shots. There’s not enough players on our bench to replace guys when they play bad. It’s 100% coaching.
That’s what gets me. The roster has the talent to be competitive in the AAC but they’re not even close. The players just have zero BBIQ and don’t seem to be running any sort of coherent brand of basketball.

When Mills came here he said a lot about how he would focus on analytics and 3s are more valuable than 2s, good shots/bad shots, etc but it seems he has completely abandoned that idea and never even took a real stab at that brand of basketball. In 2025 you can be competitive by recruiting a bunch of shooters and playing no defense. I watch plenty of low-major teams without athletes comparable to us and they would smoke us. His good ORU teams would probably smoke us.

Instead of coaching any sort of “brand” of basketball it’s like Mills just found a bunch of transfers he thought were “good enough” and then decided to roll the ball out there without any plan. It really seems like he got his paycheck and checked out.

He's like Penny, without the ability to recruit like Penny. Memphis gets away with it because their talent and athleticism is far superior than the rest of the conference, but because they're coached by a guy that can't coach, they haven't dominated the conference like they should have the past handful of years.

And I wouldn't want someone like Penny running the program, we kind of had a bit of that with IB, but IB could bring in decent talent to get over despite not being a good coach.

I wouldn't want Penny coaching here and I didn't want Brown or Mills. We have to do better, and while I know it will be a year or two before anything is done, we have to find someone with fire and passion. No more simply nice guys. You can be a nice guy and still breathe fire when necessary. And for the love of all that is holy, the coach has to care about defense.

Not without Abmas. They would still be toss-ups, however,

          • "But WSU finds itself in the same situation as a year ago, off to a 1-6 start in conference play and in last place in the conference standings with one of the most veteran rosters in college basketball. So what isn’t translating right now for the Shockers? “That’s a good question,” Mills said. “Honestly, it’s not translating from head to heart. “I honestly thought that we would come out... our scouting report was good. I thought it was communicated. I thought they understood. I thought we practiced it. It just did not translate.”

            Zero accountability from Mills himself.

                • “I would hope the other guys feel the same way because who knows what a couple months will look like from now. This is the last opportunity for a lot of us. Coach (Mills) told us the other day that the pen is in our hands and I 1000% believe that. We can write the end of our story. We get to write how this thing finishes. I would think everybody in that locker room wouldn’t want it to go how it’s going right now.”

Sounds like he’s been made aware of how thin the ice is becoming.

I think he's just referring to the fact that most of them won't play basketball in any meaningful form after this year. I don't read that as Mills putting any concern on himself

                    • The only possible solution at this point (since Mills isn't going anywhere) is to bring in a legitimate coaching staff. We need at least 2 guys that can recruit and 1, preferably 2 guys that can scout and coach. Mills doesn't seem to be able to do anything other than convey analytics so he needs to find a staff of guys that know how to run a team.

Saal ****ed up, big time. Mills is terrible. Absolutely terrible. Like, so bad that he's got to be actually trying to be bad; I can't accept that someone is accidentally this bad.
FWIW, I agree. I was a defender of Mills last year and the start of this season. Obviously, I'm no longer defending anything he does. Realistically, I won't watch another game this season.

And who recruited most of them? How are the ones he didn't recruit originally doing? Inquisitive minds want to know.
