While I suspect all the guys who are departing probably liked Coach Brown, I do question whether are not most of them respected him and held him in high regard as a head basketball coach.

There is no loyalty from these players to Coach Brown. He lost 8 scholarship players to the transfer portal. EIGHT!! Yikes, is there any head coach in Division 1 who lost that many players to the portal this season? I know LSU has been mentioned as losing a lot of players, but they also lost their coach.

I'm thinking there was something way wrong behind the scenes last year that hasn't come out yet.

There have been rumblings that there was discord. It is not clear if it was a chemistry issue between players or something bigger with the staff, or all the above.

In retrospect, if Muma believed their investigation enough to fire Marshall, they should have cleaned the house. Becasue they all have blood on their hands.

I believe there are three reasons players left.

1) For some it was playing time
2) For some it was preferential treatment of TE
3) For all of them, the lack of formal NIL opportunities

I have supported the Athletic Dept and the basketball program since 1986. I am angry and in dismay of the shambles we find ourselves in. I don’t know what I want to do going forward.

And given the same money (NIL), they'll go to who is also giving the scholarship, even if it doesn't have anything to do with getting an education. After all, as we have seen at UNC, classes do not necessarily equal a worthwhile education, so why should the student athlete pay for it.

It's just not fair that they have to make grades and attend classes. The NCAA needs to address this asap. It's totally a racist policy.

His record in his first 2 years is better than both Turgeon's and Marshall's. He did something that neither of them did by winning the conference in his first years. This mass exodus and player distraction is not a reflection of of him as a coach. The transfer portal and the new NIL rules has changed everything.

Well Mrs. Brown, let me welcome you to SN. It is good to have you aboard. Please take notes if you would like or take the time if you wish and examine and evaluate some of the obvious threads on this here fan board forum. First of all your husband was handed the keys to the Magical Kingdom. He not only was awarded players, but he didn't have to teach them a brand new system. In Marshall's first year he was handed the keystone cops for players and they had to learn a brand new system. I hope I am not going to fast for you here. The mass exodus as you are referring to is a combination of the transfer portal, NIL and your husbands failure to game plan properly, player management and in-game adjustments. He was guilty of letting the prisoners run the penitentiary. You are correct in one area, the transfer portal and NIL are ruining college athletics. I hope you stay around awhile cause this thing is going to get really crazy.

His first year, his team overachieved relative to their talent due to covid scheduling issues. If he had played a full schedule, he probably doesn't finish first or is coach of the year and there would probably been a national coaching search.

In his 2nd year, he underachieved with the talent he had.

Sure it is. A leader is responsible for all the success and failures. We were told HCIB was a player's coach. We are learning something different. There was discontent on the team, exact detail is not fully known, but the players have been taking backhanded swipes.

I remember hearing Tad Boyle was debating on leaving WSU for HC opportunity or staying - he asked the AD if he would have a chance to be considered when Turgeon left. The story is the AD told him flatly "No". This program could not afford to take a chance on somebody who had never been a D1 coach. That is the difference between having a good AD and idiot AD.

The transfer portal and the new NIL rules has changed everything.

I bet a Gregg Marshall at the helm would have demanded the AD have something going on NIL.

Of course, HCIB is not going to be fired in the near term. He probably has 3 years to turn this program around. If he does, maybe go on to be known as one of the great coaches of the program that navigated NIL and saved the program. Or he will be spoken in terms of Cohen and Thompson.

Keys to a magical kingdom? Ha! Ha! I think you have a memory problem. The last dude choked out a coach and was making racial statements that had several players exiting on his watch but, whatever.

Maybe lack of player discipline relating to team play, inability to develop players. Poor offensive sets and schemes, and average defensive coaching and poor recruit evaluation or recruiting in general.
but hey other than that he's a great coach and the kids really like him. And at the rate he's going he'll set a record for the number of kids liking him in the first term of his contract.

Well I don't care how many wins you amass, if you can't keep your hands off people you're not a good coach. So I guess there's that factor in this "magical kingdom" you point out. Maybe Brown should imitate that.
