That's not a transfer portal problem. The number of D1 player spots hasn't changed, but the number of D1 players vying for those spots has -- and that's 100% due to Covid.
Transfer portal will definitely affect underclassman playing time, when the covid-babies have graduated and we are back to normal 5-to-play-4 though.
So if you are a HS recruit with D1 aspirations...do you wait until late spring hoping to land a spot at D1 or do you jump on the D2 offer you got during senior season. Do you wait on a D2 spot or do you accept the roster spot from a D3.

Maybe a better way to say it is that is has pushed the recruiting cycle out for HS players. Whereas before schools and recruits had a pretty good idea on what spots would be available the following year early in the season...now that picture isn't very clear until late spring, even summer. Once the season ends, D1's are filtering through the portal, seeing what they can accomplish there and then going back to HS recruits to fill any openings that didn't get handled via portal or an existing player deciding to go/stay, use COVID year, etc.

He's going to be one of those 300 that Geno talks about not finding a spot. Not sure many programs are looking for that 31% FG 1-2 A/TO ratio bench guys.

He'll be lucky if he gets picked up by a D-II school, unfortunately."In God we trust, all others must bring data." - W. Edwards Deming
