Transfer Portal Discussion (outgoing player tracking)
The other impact of the transfer portal (and especially right now with the extra COVID year eligibility) is that it's making it crazy tough on HS players to get a look. The 5 and 4 stars are still getting recruited, but for everybody else it is having the effect of pushing them down a level or two from where they would have been recruited before. D1 schools are primarily portal focused on getting either guys that are coming down from a high P5 or grabbing a guy that is "overperforming" his current school. So then guys that would have been a D1 recruit before are having to go D2 to "prove it" and try to transfer up later, which means prior D2 level recruits get pushed down to D3 or NAIA and so forth.

That's not a transfer portal problem. The number of D1 player spots hasn't changed, but the number of D1 players vying for those spots has -- and that's 100% due to Covid.
Transfer portal will definitely affect underclassman playing time, when the covid-babies have graduated and we are back to normal 5-to-play-4 though.

Great points. It’s also why we will end up with more 23 and 24 year old college players than ever now. A lot of it was due to CoVid do overs but it still will happen:
The scenario will be:
-Player goes from HS to prep school because he is under recruited or goes to junior college which already has a crowded roster so he redshirts or
-Player signs with D-1 school from Prep School and redshirts because of a crowded roster.
-Player combines a year of prep school with two years of junior college and a redshirt year somewhere in there, either at Juco or D-1 college he signs with.
All of this is due to transfer portal and players being told in HS they are better than they are.
The above doesn’t even include players who have to sit out a year due to multiple transfers. Also we will see more grad transfers due to more redshirts preserving eligibility. but allowing player to academically advance.
No one other than maybe a practice player used to redshirt in junior college. Now I see it all the time because of the backlog of players.
While there is nothing wrong with 23 or 24 year old college players, there is a show of benefits for the P5 schools to have a couple of these on their roster to add maturity and leadership, which means they will probably poach them from other schools as grad transfers, increasing this portal nonsense more than ever. Charlie Moore from Miami is a perfect example.
Because of the CoVid do over we have some 25 year olds running around now.

Some of it is and some of it is not a CoVid problem as long as players are being recruited over with transfers. It is why we were able to sign Ricks, so that is one case it hopefully backfires against Arkansas.
