  • Who knows how all this works. It's all about posturing. Matta may have said no. You never accept the first offer, right? But at the same time, I want a guy that has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Griffin would fit that bill. I think Brown would as well. But I just think that Griffin would bring more flash. I think recruits would be more drawn to Griffin.

And college basketball is all about the recruiting.

It an opportunity for the fans to interact with the coach. WSU has had a long record of having coaches show where there was fan participation. People actually attend the baseball and basketball coaching shows in person. It the same reason why on the pre-game show they take questions. Because the community cares and have questions about what going on with the program.

Fans should not have nor should they expect input on how the team is coached.
This is such a fake argument. You are better sticking with the "stupid questions" argument, but there are solutions for that also.

You honestly think fans should expect to have input on coaching decisions?

Mike and Dave/Bob taking questions on the pregame is not the same as a coaches call in show.

People can and still do attend the coaches show in person. I’ve never gone to one but what is stopping them from asking him a question or saying hi during the commercial break or after the show?

Why limit it to these three? There is always another option.

            • One reason that I think Brown is likely to be the guy this year is that I expect the university will want to know everything about the candidates in the search down to the color of their underwear on Sunday (bonus for those willing to wear the yellow and the black?)

If they eventually settle on someone flashy like Griffon, they'll want to know that the current allegations absolutely do not have merit and don't reflect any future danger to the university. Even if they want a boy scout, they'll want to make sure the closet is empty for the guys that have a peachy public appearance. And for someone like Thad Matta, you have to be completely confident in their health and their willingness to coach long-term for the university. The goal is someone that will improve the program over the next decade, aiming at a title. And of course, they can't be the type to look starry-eyed at every Big 12 or B1G job that opens up (though honestly, I doubt this will be an issue).

If you could wave a wand and make the DV stuff with Griffon disappear, that is probably what I'd be most excited for as a fan. As I said, Nurse and his staff are the best. The NBA isn't college ball, but the talent in the Xs and Os is at its best there and the Toronto team is hands-down the best in the business. There is very little hyperbole in saying that they are most likely the best coaching staff in the world. But that doesn't mean Griffon will be able to be as successful in the college game, where appeasing donors and recruits is just as important as polishing the product on the hardwood. Still, I would be downright excited to see a scandal-free Griffon bringing in AJ in 2021 and potentially setting the stage for Fred to be an assistant when he wants to retire.

The thing that doesn't excite me? Bringing in someone who I simply don't think has what it takes to succeed at the highest level. Danny Manning is a no-go. Pitino will never win a title without forfeiting it, he's persona non-grata. Honestly even Marshall's assistants don't have the types of resumes I want and guys like Eck, Hinson, and Cohen don't even come close.

However, on Thad Matta, you went from “it’s easy to win because he had 4 and 5 star players” to “he had a bunch of overrated so called All-Americans.” Which is it? Did he only win because he had talented players or was he coaching up overrated guys?

Also forgive me if I don’t find convincing an opinion of him that is based on a recollection of one game.

You say Ohio State cheats in football. That has nothing to do with basketball.

As far as I know Thad Matta was never penalized for or accused of any kind of cheating while at OSU.

Matta may not be the right man for the job, I don’t know. Nothing you’ve said is remotely convincing. It barely makes sense.
It makes as much sense as your supporting a old broken down coach like T Matta that can't even stand up.

I think you're being a little harsh on coach Eck!

                  • I will forgo any speculation on the future of HCGM or a possible replacement until we have a confirmed Danny Ainge sighting. As a Shockernet legend JJClamdip said, “soccer has led to the pussification of America” No offense to the soccer studs on this board and I say it as a proud parent of a high school soccer player.

                    • If there's one thing we've learned is to not under-estimate the value of a trusted associate HC. It appeared Turgeon struggled his last year hear after Boyle left. And things weren't quite the same under Marshall after Jans went to Bowling Green, then again after Forbes to ETSU, and Haier to LSU.

I would trust a former HC like Matta more to make the right assistant hire than a first-time HC (ie. Griffin). It's no guarantee, of course.

Just a different perspective to toss into the discussion.

                        • General comments: I automatically cringe when AD's hire the assistant that the players want. Doesn't seem like that works out frequently. Anyone without college experience (i.e., NBA) had better have someone on board that understands recruiting, summer shoe teams, etc. or it'll be a tough couple years. GOOD AD's have a list in their drawer of potential hires; hopefully someone consulted this back in August when the investigation started. I trust we will get a good name, but I'm prepared for a bumpy landing from this.

I heard Boatright had a really good list in the drawer but when he went to pull it out, someone had snuck in and replaced it with a piece of paper that just said BOB RICHEY

Do you honestly think there have been people calling into the coaches show and wanting to have their input on coaching decisions? Did you even listen much?

I know they do. And some of Kennedy's questions come from that audience.

I still don't understand why you believe a dumbed-down coaches show is a good thing.
