It makes sense to me that Shaq wouldn't transfer after the incident. He had already burned his redshirt year, so if he had transferred he would have lost a year of eligibility. Assuming he didn't get a transfer waiver to play immediately, he would have ended his college career having only played 3 seasons. That's a pretty steep price for a college athlete to pay for someone else's actions.

If Shaq got "punched" he should have filed assault charges. There were plenty of witnesses at that time to corroborate an assault and he would have easily transferred with no transfer penalty what-so-ever.
Most likely, Shaq did not get "punched". He got shoved hard. Probably really hard, because he potentially seriously injured another teammate on a dirty foul. Hard enough that some players could misremember it as a "punch" when fed that word by a journalist. But they will also remember that it didn't rise to the level of having to intervene. There is no way a bunch of players and assistants would watch a coach "punch" a player and not dive in to separate him. If that didn't happen -- Coach didn't punch him or probably even cross a line. If they DID dive in to separate them, then it's probable that it crossed a line.

He seems to me to be a guy that took one day at a time, and if he was tired, or didn't feel good, he took the day off.
