  • If I'm not mistaken, Hooper had a chance a couple years ago to go coach a AAA team, I believe it was with the Tigers franchise but I may be wrong. He passed on it and decided to stay with the Wingnuts.

I would gladly take Hooper in a heartbeat at WSU, but I honestly think Standiford may be the next WSU coach. All reports I've hard are that he is just biding his time at Tabor until Gene is gone from WSU.

    • I know it won't happen and one is probably done with coaching, but I could sure get into Standiford, Hooper, and Wyckoff in the dugout together.

I seem to be in the minority, but I would strongly prefer Standiford to Hooper if we insist on keeping this job "in the family."

I am also far less sold on keeping it in the family than many posters here. It is a cool idea when you are deciding between equally qualified candidates. The Gene coaching tree, however, is withered and its branches are pretty bare. I think we would be silly not to consider any of the dozens of coaches producing consistent regional teams making 25% of Gene's salary.

Yeah, we can throw out some names of former Shockers who might be a great replacement but in essence we're just throwing darts. This isn't like college baseball or football where the coaching circles and pedigrees of potential candidates are relatively small. I'm not in the know of college baseball coaches, I can't even speculate who would be a great fit and hire. Therein lies the problem. Most of us are in agreement something needs to change and that something is overwhelmingly stacked against Gene and Co. But instead of throwing out the obligatory former Shocker greats, does anyone have anything of substance to share of who actually would be a great fit, hire and has what it takes to turn this ship around?

This is not an insult to any of you. But I don't want, "anyone would be better than what we got now", reasoning or "whoever we get can't be any worse than Gene", rationalizations. I'm concerned ADES will end up throwing darts at a name.

Before we get rid of a legend, I just want to know that the athletic department does its due diligence in identifying a winner, someone who sees WSU baseball as a destination job and not a stepping stone to a BCS program, a person who has potential to be just as great as Gene and can recruit and coach the spoiled, entitled and coddled kids of this generation.
Luckily, not one single poster on this forum has to be, or will be, invited to join on the team to find the next coach. We have to have faith that our AD is little more educated on the options than us casual fans.

This. If you took the WSU connections away from these names bandied about, scratched out their identities and looked at strictly credentials, we would be scratching our heads. Not to say Hoop and others wouldn't make good coaches but we need to aim as high as possible. Look at how it turned out with our basketball coach. He was absolutely the best candidate out there and ADJS delivered.

            • And don't forget how hiring inside the family worked out for the basketball team with Randy Smithson. Things worked out much better the next two hires when it was decided to cast the nets wide.

I have no problem hiring outside the Shocker family. However, I'm totally in the dark on college baseball coaches' salaries. What kind of coach does one get for $200,000, $350,000, or $500,000? Can you really get coaches that consistently make regionals for $150,000?

Rob Walton made $108,000 in his last year at ORU in 2012. John Savage (UCLA's head coach, 2 CWS's in the last 3 years) was making $185,000 before his extension last year. I am unsure what he makes now.

Our return on investment has been the worst in all of college baseball over the last 4 years. $500k+ is an embarrassment and Gene should be ashamed for raping our university's coffers.

I have no problem with an incentive laden contract that allows a Coach to make a great salary based on results. Keep the base pay reasonable and the coach incentivised. Pay For Performance works for me.

Wow! Thanks for the info. Your last statement sounds like a great project for Lutz to do a piece on.

                      • Brian O'Connor, Virginia's head coach and 2 CWS appearances in the last 4 years, makes $240,000/yr in a contract that runs through 2014 (source was a 2011 article, so that may have gone up slightly: http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2...llege-baseball)

That article shows that only FIVE SEC coaches made what Gene makes as of 2011. The article notes that Paul Mainieri, LSU's coach, only made about 15% more than Gene that year at $625,000. ARE. YOU. SERIOUS.

Folks, we are paying a Rick Pitino salary for Northern Iowa basketball results. This guy's goodwill is toast.

                        • Pat Casey, Oregon State head coach and winner of back to back CWS Championships in 2006 and 2007, made $293,556 in 2011.

Casey, 52, has gone 578-356-4 in 17 seasons at OSU and won back-to-back College World Series titles in 2006 and 2007.

                          • How much, if any, do think the Gene and staff have been impacted by being lame ducks contract-wise?

I imagine that we may hear some excuse making about this from Gene down the line, with perhaps some validity, although he will bear some responsibility for how this has played out I would think.

Surely there have been some discussions over the past couple of years betweeen ADES and HCGS about contract issues and Gene's future as Head Coach. Does anyone have any thoughts on what kind of relationship the two men have. Does ADES show up regularly at Shocker baseball games?
