  • We can probably stop wishing that this is going to happen. They're not firing Gene, especially with only 1 year on his contract after this and Sexton as the AD. We're stuck with him and his minimal effort and recruiting for another year, then we can find his replacement. I know you all probably realize this, but I think it's worth mentioning again as another pathetic season winds to a close.

I'd love to go on about how I feel about the team but I don't think right now, after this pathetic loss to KSU, is the correct time for a meltdown on a message board.

I disagree. Why is there no chance he gets the boot?

Paul Suellentrop thinks it's 90+% that he gets fired after the season. I don't know if I'm that confident, but I'd say the odds are considerably better than 50/50.

      • If he isn't fired, Sexton needs a few thousand boots up his ass. This once proud program I believe made money. I don't think that's happening anymore and there's one big reason for it.

        • To me, it does not make financial sense to fire him at this point but we can keep bumping to help make ourselves feel better that perhaps there will be a new dawn very soon.

          Good bye Krusty & Crew!

          • I think he resigns and takes his pay out.

            • I really don't know whether Gene will be allowed to play out the string on his contract or not. Either way it's just a sad, and perhaps a somewhat embarassing, state of affairs.

Maybe that miserable loss to KSU last night will light a fire under this team, although it is more likely that it is simply an accurate barometer of where the program is right now.

I don't think he will resign because I don't think there is a payout in that case. He will either play out the string or force WSU to terminate his contract and pay him for the final year remaining.

They could always negotiate a buyout, but I don't really see Gene leaving much skin on the table.

And that reason is poor performance on the field. Unlike Obama, Stephenson can't be detached from the deterioration on his watch, and he can't blame it on Bush and get some low-information clowns actually to believe him. Still, if WSU gets hot late in the season -- possible, as unlikely as it seems; remember Fresno State won the CWS not long ago with a team barely above .500 going into post-season play -- what then?

                    • You guys will throw stones at me, but I don't think he should be fired. In the little bit of what I know about Gene is that loyalty gets in the way of him doing the right thing.
                      -- Loyalty to not over-recruit
-- Loyalty in returning to WSU from OU
-- Loyalty in not firing ACJT

This clearly is an issue when a Boss (ADES) recognizes that an employee (HCGS) needs help and decides what to do for him.
-- ADES needs to fire ACJT
-- ADES needs to hire an Associate HC that would report to Gene and understand that when Gene retires the Associate HC gets the job

                      Benefits:
-- Program is not negatively impacted by the cloud hanging over the uncertainty of who replaces HCGS
-- Recruiting could get back on track
-- ACBK would know he's on notice to start performing or he could be fired too
-- The Associate HC could start building his program and allow perhaps one of the greatest coaches in college history to plan on retiring with dignity.

Gene may have lost some energy but he is surrounded by the likes of ACJT and ACBK who certainly are not helping him. I think a little falls on ADES for not using his leadership to right the ship for a Legend.

Sure hate to see it possibly end this way for HCGS.

                      • He should have been fired for - I think it called "moral turpitude". He should be fired for lack of performance. Every year u keep him on staff is a deeper hole this program will be buried in. He burned any 2nd chances when he went to OU and publically threw WSU under the bus.

This program has to be hemorging money with the huge loss of season tickets and gate attendance in addition to loss of sponsors.

                        • Loyalty would have been not leaving in the first place. Once he did that, he lost a great deal of respect from many.

I guarantee you we will be ahead next year vs. the $500k salary we will be paying him.

Hopefully he will agree to amicably part ways.

                          • Here is my suggestion of a replacement. What I find most intriguing is the glowing endorsement GS makes about him toward the bottom along with some other high profile names. Being from OK, he'll be able to recruit OK kids with ease (which is a hotbed for us).

His career record as a head coach is 153-176. Pass.

We can do significantly better than a guy who's gonna get fired from Penn State in another couple years.

Because without Gene, this program (most likely) doesn't have a huge stadium and the history it has. You don't fire someone like Gene. Even if the last few years have been a disaster.

I'll say this right now: There is a ZERO percent chance, in my eyes, that the word "Fired" is uttered in regards to Gene. Now, "force retired" or just plain "retired" is a different story. You might think fired and force retirement is the same thing, but it isn't in regards to a guy like Gene. You let him retire, then name the street the stadium is on after him and let it go. I just don't think Sexton is going to want to have that sit there as the biggest thing on his resume as AD at WSU.

EDIT: Also, I'd like to see where Sullentrop said that he thinks Gene is fired is 90%. I just don't see him saying something like that. Even if he did say that, I'd like to read the article to get the reason as to where he came up with 90%.
