I imagine that we may hear some excuse making about this from Gene down the line, with perhaps some validity, although he will bear some responsibility for how this has played out I would think.

Surely there have been some discussions over the past couple of years betweeen ADES and HCGS about contract issues and Gene's future as Head Coach. Does anyone have any thoughts on what kind of relationship the two men have. Does ADES show up regularly at Shocker baseball games?
Yes, he is at baseball games. He is about the only one showing up these days.

What does Gene expect? To just keep endlessly getting his contract renewed without a return on investment? The message was sent loud and clear about the stagnant if not declining state of the baseball program...prove you are worth what we are paying and then we will talk.

I think ADES has grown a lot as an athletic director, he knows where the money comes from, and he drew a big fat line in the sand. Good for him.

    • I have to stop looking these up, they are just too depressing. We pay our Gene nearly twice as much as OU pays Golloway.

      Lol, just lol, at us.

Does Keith Guttin even make $100,000.00 89?

          • Gene should be required to dress up like the Hamburglar every pay day.

              • As painful as it is to look at those numbers, it should give us hope for the future. We pay a salary that can attract almost anyone in the country. This is still a destination job despite Gene's finest termite imitation.

I think it also shows that people should elevate their horizons way beyond the Kevin Hoopers of the coaching world. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Hoop...but those are some big, big names on that last page and there are lots more like them. Imagine the excitement it would bring if we snagged a hot commodity like that.

                SB's attendance chart would make a U-Turn.

ETA: I still can't believe we pay Jim Thomas the same as what Rob Walton was making at ORU though. Gag.

                • True thoughts on who we go after?

Up and comer? In the family? Established looking for additional money and resources?

We will have one chance to get it right. We MUST get everyone back on board as soon as the firing is announced. I expect 1,000 Season ticket renewals to show the AD the support to go get the GUY, not a guy.

                  • My biggest fear is that ADES circles the wagons and uses this as a chance to cut costs. It would be understandable given the last 4-5 years, but crippling in the long term.

I say go after the best available within reason. If that means snagging the next Golloway (Walton?) at $300,000 then great. If we can hit a home run and get someone like a Rob Childress from Texas A&M (current salary: $249,000. sigh) for $400k+ or whatever, outstanding. Cast the net wide and don't hire some peanut for $125k just because we lost money like crazy the last 2-3 years.

ETA: Last one I promise. UNC's Mike Fox (5 CWS appearances in the last 7 years) makes $180,000 base salary ($205 - $230k all in). He might be considered a "good deal", eh? http://www.ncaa.com/news/baseball/ar...0%99s-contract

Gawd!! I'm almost sorry I made the comment about not knowing what other successful coaches make. I feel ill!

I was half trying to be funny with my Lutz doing an article comment. Now, I think this is something that really needs to be exposed. I'd like to hear from Krusty and Krew just how they justify the obscene amount they've been paid over the last four years with the mediocre product they've put on the field.

                      • I kinda took from the eagle article before the season he blames the draft for the first bad year and the instability due to his contact situation for current recruiting troubles.

                        • Excuses are like assholes. Everyone has one. Gene has several.

He is washed up. Done. Finished. Whatever you want to call it. Schaus should have never let him come back. If they don't part ways this year, the program may never recover.
