Maybe. There are really only two numbers to consider, 64 and 10. If the P-5 becomes P-4, 64 teams will make up the P-4. There are only 10 slots to fill. There are teams lower than Kansas already in the Pac, B1G, ACC and SEC. Being #57 is like being an RPI bubble team, hoping you make the dance.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

If the P4 (16x4) numbers to 64, then the last 10-20 school are on rocky ground and debatable. Louisville has just as strong a case as KU does. Thus, KU is not a shoe in according to this article.

Louisville has every bit as strong of a case as Kansas, probably a stronger case. Both Kansas and Louisville have three national titles, Kansas has a 44-41 edge on appearances and a 14-10 advantage on F-4's. So you could say Kansas leads by a hair, but... Louisville football kicks Kansas football right in the grapes.

I still think Kansas squeaks in somewhere, but it is a close call. Those that think KU would be a slam dunk addition to the B1G, Pac, SEC or ACC need to look past blind loyalty. If it comes down to a P-4 scenario, It really is going to be a razors edge either way.

That article relates to football only; not the entire athletic program, academic program, alumni strength, TV market attraction, endowment.
Do you really think KSU would be included while KU excluded?
            No chance.

Yes. I'm not sure about the metrics of the article. The whole premise of the P4 conferences leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The driving force of realignment is money, specifically, football money. It is all about football. The shift from a P-5 to P-4 I'd about consolidating football money. It is about having four conferences supplying four teams to a playoff that is a huge financial windfall.

Unfortunately, that is all the consolidation is about. It's not about fair play, it's not about the best interests of the student athletes, it's not about playing the best competition, it's about football money. And that's where it stops. If you think it's about basketball, academics, media markets or history, look at Nebraska. They have none of that, they have football.

With that, there are ten spots available. Texas and Oklahoma are automatics, so is BYU and one or two others, so you really are looking at four to five openings. I think KU gets in, barely, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were left out, either.

There are some folks in Lawrence who would consider going Independant (ex. Notre Dame) to be an upgrade.

They already want to raise their tuition and academic requirements above the other State schools.

If they went independent they wouldn't ever win anything.

For conferences though, it's the football money that matters. All the other bits primarily matter in how they drive the football money.

It matters because the conferences are in control of football revenue, not the NCAA. For baseball and basketball, the NCAA is in control. So while strong programs in the other sports are nice and all, football is the driver because realignment is all about the money. The other bits are great when they work out, but it's ultimately about how much money a program brings to the conference, and for conferences, football is where the money is at.

If they join any other conference they won't ever win anything either

Only if that conference has a team that starts with a 'B' coached by literally anyone other than Scott Drew, or a team with a group of disciplined players that play hard and don't pee down their leg the first time they give up a dunk.

                          • Just a quick summation of some (not all)of the teams that would be vying for one of the ten openings. Some don't have a shot, but when you look at the list, and know that the decisions will be football driven, and only ten make the cut, if your school isn't good at football, you should be concerned.

Most of the left overs would make a pretty interesting promo/relegation basketball-first conference. Not that their alumni would be one bit happy about that ...

Shouldn't some schools like Washington State, Oregon State, Purdue, Northwestern, etc... be concerned that their current conference could dump them for a better replacement?
