  • Football is just a formula that the Kansas schools don't have. Lol. Seems like one day the Eagle is posting articles about the chances of Wsu bringing back football, then the next day they posting articles about Ku's football situation or lack there of. Their a.d. has literally been saying the same thing about stadium renovations for the past 6 years.

KU's atletics facilities, excluding basketball, were dismal. The AD is trying to attack the low hanging fruit first before going after the huge fianacial challenge of refurbishing Memorial Stadium. The challenge is that it's hard to raise funds to renovate with such a dismal football program, and it's hard to improve a football program with such a dismal stadium.

If WSU brings back football, the opportunity is there right now, to build a new stadium which makes it easier to recruit and increases the chances of building a stronger program. Renovating Cessna coupled with a crappy team for years will equate to diminishing support very quickly.

We can also apply the same Intrust/KS Coliseum formula to LD-Stadium. HLA/Koch was a unique renovation while maintaining the magical feel/intimacy/and noise.

Imagine how hard it is to recruit football players to KU.

The beakers flat out cannot do anything as far as refurbishing goes to their football stadium unless their team can put together 2-3 years of winning seasons, as in consecutive, which isn't going to happen. Hell they had winning seasons during the Mangino era and they still just built a new practice facility behind the stadium. Lol. I think their current a.d. is just hiding behing smoke screen by claiming he's just been focused on other issues. And by doing that he now is letting everyone know that he's faced with a issue that no other ku a.d. could solve, even when they had a winning team, which is either refurbish Memorial or tear it down and build a new one.. I personally think it's his exit strategy.

        • Random opinion, no first-hand knowledge to back this up: I think KU is fine with the status quo. They prefer to spend as little as possible on football and as long as they can keep cashing that $25 or $30 million dollar Big 12 check they'll be happy.

All of their facilities are dumps. Allen Field is a historical dump, but it's still a giant dump.

            • They have a billion dollar endowment and their facilities situation was and still sort of is horrible. Lol.. AFH is just far from state of the art and has a historical marker that's been spruced up a couple times over the years feel to it.

              • I'm not sure endowments have much at all to do with athletic departments or their facilities. For example, VCU has an endowment about the same as KU's, and yet they have athletic facilities that would fit fine in the lower half of the MVC.

Yes, bleed -- the reason they talk about The Phog is that is sounds better and more mystical than The Barn.

                  • The College Sports Solutions report on Wichita State athletics may not be released for another week or longer, interim athletic director Darron Boatright said.
“We have not ordered any confetti cannons,” he said. “This is just going to be information and it’s the type of information people on a college campus generally get excited about because there’s research that’s been done and there’s up-to-date information.”

                    • Not sure I am wild about the build up expectations and then knock them down approach WSU seems to have taken on this endeavor. I would prefer they do the opposite not that it really makes much differences in the ultimate outcome.

                      • In other words. Nobody wants us with or without football. But we are holding out hope that another round of conference shakeups will happen in the next few weeks to change the landscape of college sports.

                        • Wow sully just tweeted a link to story that the MVC when asked if they would consider WSU for the football conference the commissioner said "We're not interested in somebody using us a stepping stone" and responded with "why would we want to make it easy for them to leave to another league."

                          • "We'd like to trap the golden goose as long as we can cause none of the rest of us can sustain ourselves"

The quotes in that article are so Valley it isn't even funny.

"We are only interested in schools that are content"

"Schools that have high aspirations of competing at the highest level are not at all what we're looking for"

This is the crap people at the Valley office are willing to say, in public. And everyone wonders why WSU wants the hell out.

Here is the article in question.

Nothing in this article is really very surprising IMHO.
