  • The US wants things to escalate. War is profitable and there are a lot of "important" people and politicians who have their hands in that pie.

It is not exactly that. The Ukraine president is saying that, but their Military (and Intelligence) services are actually worried.

The invasion is not "imminent" like the White House was contending (and I think there is a news story that the Biden administration is no longer using that word), but Russia is continuing to move combat units and combat support units and supplies into the theater every day. This is an unprecedented build-up of Russia's combat power.

Not sure what the end game is going to be - there has to be something that Biden gives Putin for him to save face.

          • U.S. reveals Russian plot to use fake video as pretense for Ukraine invasion

The U.S. has revealed new intelligence of a Russian plot to use a phony video as a pretext for an invasion of Ukraine.

Senior administration officials said Thursday that the U.S. believes Russia has already recruited players to stage a propaganda video depicting "graphic scenes of a staged false explosion with corpses, actors depicting mourners, and images of destroyed locations and military equipment."
in addition, Marco Rubio came out of classified briefing and said it not a matter of "if", but "when".

But it not all doom and gloom, leaked documents (wonder who leaked them) show U.S. has made some concessions to the Russians on arm control

he Western allies have dismissed calls to slam shut NATO's door, but the leaked letters call for 'meaningful arms control discussions and dialogue with Russia on mutual transparency and confidence-building measures'

My conspiracy theorist part of me think maybe the Biden administration is really trying to hype Ukraine so if there isn't a war, they can claim a victory and Neville Chamberlain "Peace in Our Time"!

The real risk is what are they giving away?

There is precedent for what was likely given or will be given. See the $1.7 billion given to Iran.

Get the jingoism aspect of nations, but saying that generally our adversaries since WWII have been worse actors than we are....Soviet Union, North Korea, North Viet Nam, communist Cuba, communist Nicaragua, Taliban, Iran, and Saddam's Iraq. The fact that we have made so many foreign policy mistakes over the years gets in the way of seeing this.

I never said, nor believe, that our adversaries are worse than us. This is the greatest country in the world! Being anti foreign war is not being anti American.

                    • Just watched an interview with former Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman on Amanpour. Being Amanpour, the initial focus was on his whistleblowing on the Trump administration back in 2019 but eventually got around to the current crisis. He more or less put his reputation on the line by flatly stating that, all things considered, he believes Putin will invade the Ukraine. I respect this man's honesty and judgement. He was born in the Ukraine and admittedly is doing all he can to support its survival. His theory is that Putin has given up on trying to move the Ukraine into the Russian orbit through politics and subterfuge. Because the Ukraine's movement towards the West now seems inalterable, invasion is all that is left.

                      • Open-source intelligence (from commercial satellites) indicates that there is a surge of troops to their equipment that has been building up for the last several weeks. In Belarus, units are leaving the FOB and moving to forward locations.

                          • Western countries are telling their citizens to leave Ukraine immediately. Something has spooked Ukraine and NATO. There is a belief that the invasion has been ordered by Putin and it will occur within the next week.

                            Russia currency is tanking.

There is also a report that U.S. utilities companies have been put on alert. There has been a significant increase in attempts at malware deployment. US Gov believes there will be a cyber attacks in conjunction (to divert US attention). It will be interesting to find confirmation of this.

                              • Responding to new intelligence suggesting possible Russian military action in Ukraine before the end of the Olympics, a Ukrainian official close to the government’s thinking on this says that the “situation is really serious and uncertain.”

Multiple sources familiar with the matter told CNN earlier today, that the US and its allies have new intelligence that suggests Russia could launch an attack on Ukraine even before the end of the Olympics,

Previous assessments had suggested that Russia was unlikely to move into Ukraine until after the Olympics end on Feb. 20, U.S. officials had told CNN in the past.

The revelation of the new intelligence comes as administration officials have dramatically ramped up the urgency of their public warnings related to Ukraine in the past 24 hours.
Tensions between Moscow and Kyiv are at their highest in years, with a large Russian troop buildup near the shared borders of the two former Soviet republics. Follow for live news updates.
