If one is paying attention, I believe one will find within posts that a fair number of those who are "minimizing the effectiveness" of cloth (or cheap) masks, do wear masks on at least occasions, even before mandatory wearing was required in areas. We see a lot of misuse, or reliance, of those masks, particularly to not distancing and improper wear, without mention the other hazards that masks can cause people to do (fiddle with it, touch their face/eyes, cause fogging of glasses particularly where people are going in and out of cool buildings into summer heat, then fiddling again with mask and glasses (and eyes)). Limiting the number of outings and distancing FIRST, will most likely do more good than many (or most) who wear these masks and don't do those two things. Obviously, not doing either of those 2 things I just mentioned and not wearing any mask is a recipe for bad things.

I think this is why you have heard, such as Fauci early on, poo poo the wearing of cloth masks. They have determined that too many people are just not going to do those first 2 things, so they're hoping they can get many to at least wear masks and reduce the odds that way. Unfortunately, too many people are relying on those cloth or cheap masks to keep them safe.

Those are the masks recommended by the CDC...you know, the cloth or cheap ones.

        Oxygenated degradation of catecholamines
Degradation of Dexmedatomidine in the presence of ozone
Clean room design in pharmaceutical manufacturing

What does that have to do with anything? I design rooms that use HEPA filtration, air exchanges, sterile filtration, and terminal sterilization to make sure that every single injectable drug is 100% free of fungi, microbes, and viruses. I review air turbulence, air locks, cascading airflow, sterile filtration, terminal filtration, particulate counts, and microbial growth. We are talking millions of samples per year in an area twice as big as your house. I know how they are transmitted, I know how they grow. I know which ones are objectionable.

There is ZERO evidence that cloth masks do ****. Surgical masks probably help a little. N95s help a lot. If you aren’t wearing a fitted mask, or worse yet, if you aren’t taking care of it, you might as well be licking a toilet seat.

Until about an hour ago, I was under the impression that masks were probably harmless, and maybe someone will do some work and find out that they help a little. Now I think they are as dangerous as Covid if people aren’t educated.

Please! Look into this guys. Weigh the risks. Make your own decision. I’m done talking about masks.
Brother, I will NEVER agree with that statement. I don't care if you're #9 in HEPA filtration lol. :D

Lots and lots of hyperbole coming from a scientist. No bueno!

There are a multitude of unintended benefits from wearing masks - regardless of their filtration.

        1) Creating urgency while out in public thus shortening shopping trips.
        2) Causing behavior changes during social interactions: i.e., less eye contact/safer face angle, less talking, shorter interactions (this absolutely occurs with me)
        3) Causing others to distance themselves from you (absolutely happens).
        4) Keeps fingers out of mouth and nose while out and about.

This is not even taking into considering the benefits of >5nm respiratory droplet blocking for the wearer and the wearee.

Waving a badge around while screaming out occupational duties is nice (maybe even a little funny), but following it up with a summary judgment on the worthlessness of the type of mask most people wear is not only irresponsible, it's criminal. In fact, I am going to start calling you The Mask Terrorist.

Please lower your tone on the issue and thank your fellow citizen for their efforts in masking up and attempting to social distance.

You're not seeing the forest for the trees brother. It is not an uncommon problem with scientists. That's what guys like me are for... to marry science with perspective hopefully coming up with practical solutions.

You strive for perfection in your work, but in the real world... sometimes excellence is all that's needed. (paraphrased from a good coach) :)

I go out no more than 3 times per week, most of the time two.

Having said that, I also use KN95 masks (that I order on Ebay).

In my usage situation, I get 3-4 weeks out of a mask, when I can see it is getting dirty, I get rid of it (dirty=discoloration of the white material - dirt smudges and the like).

I would imagine if you are wearing your mask all day, you would probably need to change about once a week, IF you are using something similar to a KN95.

I am going to have to run several errands on Saturday (pick-up at the seafood market), trip to the hardware store to get a sheet of plexiglass and a trip to the UPS store (I need something printed for the closing on my house), so tomorrow will be a bit of an oddity for me.

Good news, though, hospitalizations are slowing down some, not only here, but also in Houston. Close the bars and make everybody wear a mask and you can beat this stuff back!
There is a story of people getting Legionnaires from not changing their masks in a timely manner.

Probably a lot more that are presumed positive Covid, and they never get the simple treatment to save their life.

Maybe from a CPAP machine. No way from a respirator unless you're storing it inside your toilet tank.

                I. Want. Proof! :)

                      What on earth?.....

Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia caused by bacteria. You usually get it by breathing in mist from water that contains the bacteria. The mist may come from hot tubs, showers, or air-conditioning units for large buildings. The bacteria don't spread from person to person.
Legionnaires' disease doesn't spread from person to person. Instead, the bacteria spreads through mist, such as from air-conditioning units for large buildings. Adults over the age of 50 and people with weak immune systems, chronic lung disease, or heavy tobacco use are most at risk.
Many people exposed to the bacteria don't develop symptoms. Those who do develop symptoms may experience cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches, and diarrhea.
Legionnaire's disease can be treated with antibiotics.

You post a comment about someone getting Legionaires disease from a mask (implying we could get it from our old masks), I reply that I'm highly skeptical and ask for proof as well as indicating it was likely a CPAP machine mask as they actually do rarely cause the infection you mentioned, and I'm a drama queen?

                      Jesus man.

OK, so I can go get those alcohol butt wipes and use those? Sort of like cleaining the toilet before I lick it, right?!?
