This is why you add more great players each year. With your logic the Shockers should not have recruited X man because Carr & Livingston were already on the roster. Was it a mistake for the Houston Rockets to pair the twin towers together back in their playing days?
Did you notice I stated in GGG we trust?

True story: Carl Williams was in Wichita in the summer of '81. He shared freely of one of his star pupils (X) who would be suiting up for the Shocks in the fall. Had 8x11 glossies even. He further shared that X's teammate on the South Carolina championship team was interested in coming to WSU to play also. Unfortunately, for us as well as the young man, we already had a 6'6" swing in Ricky Ross, who didn't make it through summer school. No surprise there. We also had, for the summer only, the Mississippi POY on the roster, 6'6" (also) Donnell Allen. Yep, that's right, the coaching staff jilted a future 16 year NBA 6'6" small foward; Tyrone Corbin.

If we can make room for 2 seven footers I'm all for it.

Agree, you never turn down a talented seven footer.

Wow, Donnell Allen's a blast from the past. Wasn't there a recruiting issue/violation with him? Recall the WSU SID announced his signing before he actually signed and everything fell apart and he never played here. He was highly rated IIRC? The old memory is fading quickly.

It's interesting looking at X's freshman numbers and the explosion thereafter.

I believe Allen was a top 50. I think with him the issue was grades. I witnessed him shooting around and playing pick up at Henry Levit in the summer of '81. So he did at least make it to the campus. Oh what could have been with Allen and Ross, added to what we already had. Plus Ozell! Alas, it was another near miss for the Shocks... It's due to swing the other way real soon!!

        • Would have been great to have Ty Corbin come along with X. I am glad that we got the better end of the deal with Xavier McDaniels great career. I believe Donnell Allen was not allowed to sign with us after coach Smithson mentioned that he was going to sign soon & the NCAA declared it to be a violation. Anyway this new era has the Shockers making a triumphant return like those glory days in recruuiting.

i remember when depaul played louisville (two superpowers then) on nbc in corbin's freshman year, and just by association they mentioned at length wichita state and xavier mcdaniel.. big ups. very proud.

corbin wanted to come to wichita state.. but they didn't have room. 'told him no. it's strange that corbin was the higher rated recruit, but that the shocker staff wanted x instead. that staff was actually pretty sharp on player evaluation. so how was it that the nbc crew was hip to xavier mcdaniel? corbin was the higher rated recruit (and did very well at depaul glory days and in the nba).

I'm sure that's accurate. But he did make it to campus, or should I say Henry Levitt, because I was on the same court with him during summer pick up ball. Wish it would have worked out.

WTH are you talking about? You must think this is the Bryan Penn-Johnson thread instead of the Shocker Nostalgia for Old Geezers thread.

Look at it like this: The next time one of your Chicken buddies says "What basketball history has WSU ever had?" you can set 'em straight, even though they probably won't listen because they're sure the Shockers weren't relevant beyond the last 10 years. But that surely doesn't implicate anyone on this board though -Ahem-

Yes. Posted 4 or 5 days ago by @shocks02: before the board tooks its obligatory detour.

I saw that but didn't read it as an in-home. Boy would he be a HUGE get. Fingers crossed!

Every year, Mr. WuDrWu always throws out a comment that makes all of our ears pop up. You know, those subtle hints that something good is about to happen. This year he has been strangely quiet.

Come on doc, throw us a bone!

You're right that initial tweet that was posted did not specifically mention an in-home visit. But both tweets were made on September 13th and we are at a time in the recruiting calendar were Coaches can do in-home visits as well as do player evaluations. My guess is that they watched Bryan work out as well as having an in-home visit.

Now we'll have to see if they moved the needle enough to get an on-campus visit.
