  • Personally, I think Humphries chose poorly and will suffer in terms of his development for being so deep on the bench. (Swen Nater doesn't come along very often.) But that's just me -- who knows what he thinks, and who knows whether UK will be his last stop?

What does seem clear is that his next stop is unlikely to include a quick trip to the NBA, at least unless he has a truly epic turnaround. If he were to leave, and to be interested in WSU at a time when WSU had an opening (also a key factor, and one that may have worked against his ending up here to begin with), I think he'd certainly be worth at least considering.

    • As far as blowing the lid off, I think he is an afterthought to the coaching staff. If he was here he would be the focus of a world class coaching staff and we would be talking about a dominant front court game complemented by our guard trio of VV, Baker, and the Hotdog Thief. All three would have little to no pressure.

        • I think I said this in here before, but I'm not sure he had an option to come here. I've heard from several people (that are in no way associated with the program, but know more than I do) that when he was here for his visit, he wouldn't go out and play with the guys, and that the players and coaches that he was around weren't impressed with him as far as having the right kind of attitude to be a Shocker. I never did hear for sure that we even offered him, so we may not have been an option for him. And after what I've seen at UK, I can kind of understand why, although 7 foot that isn't a complete project sounds kind of nice.

          • Humphries will get more playing time......in 3 years or whenever he transfers out of Kentucky....whichever come first. I think Cal will recruit over him again this year if he has a half a chance.

Even when Kentucky's bigs started to get into some foul trouble, Cal didn't put him on the court. Not sure if he was hurt (he didn't play in that game nor the following game against Tennessee) or Cal is just not using him all that much.

A quick look at his stat line reveals about 9 MPG with 2 points a game and 2 rebounds a game. He was touted as having a high BBIQ but as a very young NBA prospect that needed some polish. He's not seeing much of the court and not real productive when he is. Again, this is just a quick glance at his stats. That's clearly not the entire story. Has anybody seen him on the court?

I suspected he would get buried on UK's bench and that seems to be the case.

Either way, I wonder if he regrets his decision? Would he get more minutes if he had chose to play in the black and yellow? Would you pursue him if he transferred from Kentucky?
He's not the only one. Mycheal Mulder didn't either. I wonder how he feels about his coach refusing to let him sign with us early, and I wonder if HCGM will ever recruit another Vincennes player again.

              • I'm hopeful 3G doesn't stop recruiting there, as they've put out some good players. However, I'm not sure what the relationship there is outside of the Mulder situation.

Wasn't Carter from Vincennes? He worked out well.

That's an interesting perspective and one which seems plausible to me, at least knowing what we do about the way Marshall looks to how a recruit fits in with his current crop of players. I suspect he places far more emphasis on that then what I may have once considered. As for whether or not that is the case with Humphries, I, like you, have no idea. But I'll take it as it makes me feel much better about Humphries choosing UK over WSU!

                    • Pretty sure Humphries was who HCGM was alluding to when he mentioned we had a good chance at a big time recruit. I'm pretty certain we offered.

You may or may not be right. I'm not so certain.

I think the stipulation was we get him cleared to play this year.

I agree that was one of the stipulations before he came on his visit. This visit is when the questions come up.

                            • WHAT IF...

Coach Cal and Marshall are friends, and WSU couldn't get him through the clearing house but UK could and what if it was a stash and play at UK with intent to transfer to WSU?
