I think it will depend on what kind of skill set he can bring to bear. We hear and see a lot about his dunking prowess, but that in and of itself will not be nearly enough to be contributor at the D-1 level where he might get one or two dunk opporutinities a game. Hopefully, he has a few other arrows in his quiver in addition to be able to dunk. And, of course, to be able to play for 3G he will have to be able to defend and to rebound. With his body it's hard to believe he won't be a very good rebounder, or at least there is no reason for him not to be a good rebounder. Defending at the D-1 level is always a challenge for the first year player out of high school.

A lot is being said lately regarding Shaq's dunking, which is impressive. However, let's not assume he is that one dimensional. I'm bringing this video link from his first page back to here so we can get another look at what Shaq had in his quiver back in November 2011 (that's when it was posted) at the beginning of his junior year.

Let's look at him as a "Carl Hall" type of player. I'm not saying he'll be as good, better, or worse, just the style of ball. Not until this year did Carl develop a short jumper, has expanded it out a little ways, but has used it very little. Shaq looks to be very mobile, has ups, and has some handles. He can play with his back to the basket and may already have as good of short jumper as Carl. He definitely likes to hunt down blocks. As with most all HS seniors, you won't know how fast he learns what D-I basketball is all about until he gets here.

And I believe it was 3G that compared him a little bit to Durley. Big, mobile kid with size that has a decent jumper as well. If I remember correctly, his HS coach said he had a good jump shot out to about 15 feet and has hit a couple of threes. Also, his work ethic isn't being questioned as it was a couple of years ago. The dunking thing excites me only because I want a big man that's going to dunk when he has the chance. In recent memory, I think only Blair has done that. You can watch games of a number of other schools and they'll have guys that will dunk every opportunity. Those guys, in my opinion, are less likely to get swatted on put backs or miss those bunnies. I'm hoping Shaq can be that guy for us.

Good stuff ShockTalk. Having watched Shaq in person, I know he has the physical attributes to be a very good contributor as a Shocker. Like any kid coming out of high school, he will have to improve in certain areas. However, the staff knows his strengths and weaknesses and will be ready to address them this summer. I certainly have seen areas where he needs to improve, but I have no doubt that he will do what is needed to make those improvements. Also, after spending some time visiting with him, I am truly excited that this staff has brought still another really quality young man into the program. What a truly special young man he is.
