In the steeplechase there are 2 heats with 12 runners in each heat. Top 5 in each heat plus the next two fastest times move on to the finals. Tomas is running he Heat 1.

Austin falling off the pace in the shot put and the high jump. Hopefully, he has a strong 400 meter run in him to finish off Day 1.

Austin in 10th place heading into the 400 to finish Day 1.

Austin runs a 49.61 in the 400 and moves back up to 8th place at the end of Day 1. Not sure if he can hold on their because he not real strong in the Day 2 events.

Tomas Cotter just manages to finish in 5th in his steeplchase heat and he will move into the finals on Friday.

Toma finished with the 7th fastest time in qualifying 8:43.38. I believe his best time is 8:41.02 in the NCAA West Preliminary Meet. He had the 8th fastest time in the nation coming into the NCAA Championship meet.

I don't think Tomas can challenge for the top spot but he does have a shot at a Top 8 finish which would make him an All-American.

Austin ran a 15.49 in the 110H and finished in 20th place. This dropped him 6 spot into 14th. UNI's Daniel Gooris is currently in 18th.

The decathlon discuss is now in progress. Austin is in Flight 2. The best throw in Flight 1 was 136-4.

Nathaniel Franks of Arkansas started of Flight 2 with a throw of 34-10 (must have slipped or was a dying quail).

Austin throwing second in Flight 2 nailed it with what I believe is a new PR of 160-7. So hopefully he will get back into the Top 10. UNI's Gooris threw 134-11 in Flight 1. However, Gooris is a great vaulter and a very good 1500 runner so he usually makes a big move at the end of the day.

Austin moved back into 8th place with his oustanding discus throw, which was 2nd best in the competition, but now he is facing he pole vault which, unfortunately, is definitely one of his weakest events.

UNI's Daniel Gooris, the MVC Champ, is now in 16th but he should make a big move in the vault which is his best event.

I think Austin's best vault is around 14-9. Gooris will probably clear well over 17.

Austin in danger of no-heigting in the pole vault. He opened at 13-9.25 and has missed on his for 2 attempts. One more attempt to avoid a disaster.

Whew! Austin makes it on his 3rd try. Not a great jump in terms of height but it was in terms of pressure.

That puts him back down to 12th, but considering he flirte with no-heighting 15-1 for Austin is OK. Not sure what his PR is but I think that is a season best vault for him.

Austin leads off the javelin throw with a strong throw of 187-3 on his first attempt which is a new PR for him.

He must be practicing with John Rizzo.

If I did my calculations correct Austin needs to run a 5:26 in the 1500 to beat his personal best of 7599.

Austin sitting in 9th place after 9 events. Not sure how he stacks up in the 1500. I don't think it is a real strength for him. He ran 4:46.70 earlier this year in Arkansas. I doubt that will be good enough to move up.

You can watch it on ESPN3 coming up after a couple more men's 4x400 relay semi-finals.
