  • Shocker Men 2013 Outdoor Track and Field

Zach Budda cleared the bar at 6-11 ¾ in the men’s high jump. The freshman’s jump is the fifth highest in Shocker history and earned him a third place finish.

Always exciting to see freshman doing so well so early in their careers.

Other performances and results from the KT Woodman meet this weekend can be found here:
WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State Track & Field Team continued to make history on day two of the KT Woodman Classic with five top 10 performance and one new school record.

Austin Bahner ran, threw, and jumped his way to the second best decathlon score in school history. The junior out of Wichita Heights scored 7,449 points at the Arkansas Team Invitational to move into 12th place nationally.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark- Austin Bahner ran, threw, and jumped his way to the second best decathlon score in school history. The Wichita native scored 7,449 points at the Arkansas Team Invitational to move into 12th place nationally. An NCAA Second-Team All-American during the indoor season, Bahner's score will likely qualify him for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The junior's performance ranks atop the Missouri Valley Conference. He leads his closest competition by 50 points. Bahner won the MVC Heptathlon Championship during the indoor season. If he can claim victory in the decathlon at conference, he would be the first Shocker to ever sweep by multi championships. The meet at Arkansas began with the men's 100m dash. Bahner ran a season best of 10.92 to pick up 825 points. In his second event. the long jump, Bahner (7.02m) posted the fifth best mark in the Valley this season. Bahner wrapped up day one with respectable numbers in the shot put (14.85m) , the high jump (1.87m), and the 400m dash (49.76). The Wichita native started day two with a personal best of 15.57 in the 110m hurdles. This PR added 639 points to Bahner's score. Bahner topped all other decathletes in the discus throw. The junior launched a mark of (45.65m) to pick up 780 points. The junior added 760 points in the pole vault (4.50m) and 618 points in the javelin (51.63m). He finished his decathlon with a time of 4:46.70 in the 1,500m scoring 639 more points. Bahner and the rest of the Wichita State Track & Field team will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the MVC Outdoor Championships May 10-12. Junior decathlete Austin Bahner is only 151 from reaching the "B" (provisional) qualifying standard for Olympic Trials, although it's likely he'd need to (at least) reach the A standard of 7900 (another 300 points) to actually get an invite. Given his progression over the last year, not at all out of reach.

Senior Tanya Friesen already has achieved the B standard and needs only to improve 43 points off her PR to reach the automatic A standard.

Pretty darned impressive if you ask me. It would be awesome to see a couple of area athletes involved in the trials in 3 years.

Looking at the form charts for the Valley men it looks like Indiana State will probably be a solid favorite to repeat as Outdoor Champions coming up May 10th - 12th.

Shocks should be a strong contender for 2nd with SIU and their very strong throwers being in the mix as well.

Shocks have a challenge in replacing the scorng of Lawson Montgomery, Todd McKown and Dylan Hartnett.

The Shocks will have their usual contingent of strong decathletes led by Jr. Austin Bahner. 3-Time defeinding MVC Decathlon winner, Sr. Daniel Gooris of UNI, will no doubt return to defend his title. While Austin has the best score this spring Gooris is close behind and he won't give up his throne easily. Gooris is the best pole vaulter in the Valley and has cleared 17' this season. Jr. Tobias Boese, Sr. Mac Griffith, and Sr. Justin Hickey are all capable of scoring in the decathlon if they choose to participate.

Jr. D.J. Lindsay will do most of the work for the Shocks in the 200M and 400M races. Hopefully, D.J. will be on his game.

Juniors Ryan Hocker and Kelvin Busienei should provided some points in the 800M run. Senior Jake Wike is capable of scoringin the 800 but will have to pick up the pace from what he has shown so far this Spring. Ryan and Kelvin are also capable of scoring in the 1,500.

Sr. Tomas Cotter has the best 1,500M time in the Valley this Spring. He also has the best time in the 3K Steeplechase and the 5th best time in the 5K run. Not sure Tomas will attempt that triple though. My guess is he will run the 1,500 and the steeplechase. But we will see.

If Tomas doesn't run the 5K the Shocks may very well get shut out in that event. In the 10K race, Sr. Marcos Bailon and So. Justn Scott are capable of scoring but will probably not be in the Top 3 or 4.

Without Montgomery and Lawson the Shocks don't have much to offer in the hurdles.

The Shocker men need to make hay in the high jump. They have 4 of the 5 best jumps in the conference this year led by 3 Freshmen. Zach Budda has cleared 6-11.75, Garret Lynch 6-11, and Kerry Graber 6-9. Shocker Sr. Mac Griffith has gone 6-6.75 which ties for the 5th best jump in the Valley this year with 2 other jumpers.

In the pole vault UNI's Gooris is a full foot higher than anyone else on his best day. The Shocks have 3 vaulters capapble of scoring. Jr. Alex Freshour, Jr. Lex Parsons and So. Ethan Pearson.

The Shocks have 3 long jumpers capable of 23' jumps which should be in the scoring. Fr. Blake Glasgow-Willard, Jr. Austin Bahner and So. Grant Ralston all have 23' jumps to their credit this spring.

Blake Glasgow-Willard and fellow Freshman Shazz Michael Lindo, who will no doubt make the All-Name team, have the 2nd and 3rd best triple jumps in the Valley this spring although they are both a full 4' behind Doug Palacious of SIU. Jr. Taylor Cross is also capable of sneaking into the top 8 for a point or two in the TJ.

Sr. Chris Dubree has the 2nd best shot put in the Valley this spring.

The javelin is another key event for the Shocks. You can give the gold medal in this event to Illinois State's Tim Glover, 2-time defending NCAA Champion in the event and it won't be close. Tim will be 40 t0 50 feet clear of the field in the event. However, the Shocks have 4 of the next 5 best throws in the Valley this spring with Sr. Jon Rizzo (216-4), Fr. Tyson Holmes (213-5), Fr. Dylan Reimer (202-11) and Fr. Chase Pote (191-8). Also, Fr. Gehrig Keane (186-1) has the 10th best throw so it not impossible for him to sneak in for a point if he get's of a season best throw.

It's probably not impossible for the Shocks to overtake Indiana State but they probably need to perform at or a little above their season bests and Indiana State probably needs to stumble some for that to happen.

          Go Shocks!

The relays will also prove important and that's an area where the Trees have excelled in recent events.

Yep, can't afford to drop the baton in either the 4x100 or the 4x400. If the guys run a clean race they should be able to score some decent points in those two races.

'72- I think you gave a good summary so I won't repeat much of what you said except to add:

Wike has been hurt for most of the outdoor season so don't expect a huge improvement for him. Hopefully the races are tactical (like they are at big meets sometimes) and he can use his legendary kick to score high. The 800/1500 guys have been solid but up and down outdoor so those will be big races to watch.

I think Cotter will come back for the 5k, he is running at such a high level right now. Look for him to be the big point scorer for WSU at this meet.

Cory Beenken should score a few points in the 110h. He has always scored in MVC competition so look for the senior to do it again outdoor. Don't fret about the hurdles, WSU has signed 5 new ones (4 state champions) for next year.

Indiana St will be very tough to beat but the good thing for WSU is that we have a very deep team that can score just about everywhere. WSU will need to be clicking on all cylinders but if they do they could pull an upset. SIU is in the mix but would need the top-2 to fall down considerably.

Should be a fun meet to watch at Drake!

Thanks for those additions @goshox74:. You provide the kind of insight and knowledge I simply do not have and I appreciate the information. The injury situation is always kind of fluid but can have a big impact on a team.

Shocker men picked to finish 2nd behind Indiana State in the MVC Outdoor Championships.

That is pretty much as expected.

WICHITA- Kan.- Wichita State Track & Field will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships this weekend. The Shockers will try to win their 17th and 18th team conference titles of the Steve Rainbolt era.

The Shockers enter the conference meet with the top three high jumpers in the Valley. Zach Budda leads the Valley with a jump of 6-11 ¾. Garrett Lynch posted the second highest jump of the season (6-11). MVC Indoor High Jump Champion, Kerry Graber (6-9) will try to sweep the event in 2013.
I assume Coach Wise, a recruiting coordinator gets some credit for bringing this outstanding group of high jumpers into the fold. Not sure which of the Coaches work with the high jumpers but they have to be drooling. I'm guessing that is Coach Rainbolt by process of elimination. Maybe @goshox74 can shed some light on that.

It is not just that we enter the Valley Championship with the top 3 outdoor performances of the season but Zach and Garrett are Freshmen and Kerry is listed as a Sophomore. Ka-ching!

Zach is out of Augusta, Kansas and, appropriately, is an aeronautical engineering major.

Garrett is from Parkersburg, WV majoring in education.

Kerry, the old man of he group as a sophomore, is another local product out of Maize South H.S.

Good luck, guys. A sweep of the top 3 spots would be sweet indeed. :good:

LOVE to see these local kids excel. LOVE IT.

Are those jumps enough to get anybody to the NCAAs?

Well 6'11.75 (or 2.13M) is good enough for a tie for 54 so far this spring, so I am guessing no. That being said, a mere 1 more inch clearance would put him in the top 26, so anything is possible.

Looks like the Valley/Drake folks aren't real interested in reporting results. Not that I am too surprised by that.

So far the only thing that has been reported is the Decathlon Long Jump (the 2nd event of the Decathlon).

Assuming what is being reported is accurate Austin Bahner took the top spot in the event with a very strong jump of 23-11.50. Shocks also took the 5th, 7th and 8th spots in that event.

It looks like the first three events are in. They don't have a nice combined standing.

Never mind I found the combined results
