Austin Bahner off to a great start with two firsts with a 10.63 time in the 100M dash and a 23-11.5 foot long jump. I think these may well be new PR's for Austin. Of course, these are two of his better events so getting off to a good start in these events is important for Austin.

Shocker decathletes also finished in 5th, 7th and 8th in the 100M

Austin finished a solid 3rd in the Shot Put with a 42' throw behind teammate Mac Griffith (44-02.50) and UNI's Daniel Gooris (43-10) the defending champs. Shocks also finished in 5th and 6th.

Austin has a 213 point lead over defending champion Daniel Gooris of UNI. He will need that because Gooris is a tremendous pole vaulter and a storng high jumper.

I still think this end up being a tight competition between Bahner and Gooris.

Shockers also sitting in 4th, 5th and 7th but here is a long way to go.

      @1972Shocker:, you're killing me with the non-metric results! :)

That's a big long jump for Austin no doubt. Not a great shot put but acceptable.

That being said, everyone is chasing Gooris who is having a GREAT start to the decathlon, a full 216 points ahead of his season best score.

By comparison, Austin is ahead of his best by 123.

Gooris really helped himself by throwing 13.36M on his final attempt in the SP. For us dummies that's 43-10.

Gooris by the way is a monster athlete and will blow this event up when he clears nearly 5.50M (18 feet) in the vault. There is no shame finishing behind this guy who just might represent the USA in the Olympics some day.

At the end of day one in the Decathlon the Shock's Austin Bahner leads the defending champion, UNI's Daniel Gooris, by 194 points.

Austin is 111 points ahead of his Day 1 total from the PR he set at Arkansas in late April. He scored 3,574 points on Day 2 which would put him at 7,560 if he can duplicate that effort.

At about that same time Gooris was setting his season best at the Drake relays. He is 197 points ahead of his Day 1 pace in that meet with he strongest events in front of him. If he matches the 3,800 points he put up on Day 2 at Drake he will finish at 7,592.

            Tommorrow's event:

            110 Hurdles: Pretty even match.
Discus: Austin seems to have the advantage in this event. He needs to make hay here to have any chance.
Pole Vault: Huge advantage to Gooris who is the best vaulter in the Valley
Javelin: They look to be pretty even in this event.
1,500M Run: Gooris with a big advantage here as well.

Austin will probably have to come up with two or maybe three PR's to hold off Gooris tomorrow. This will be very interesting.

Absolutely, and if Austin somehow finds a way to pull of the upset what a huge win for the kid from Heights!

Shocker Jr. Jeff Connor, out of Wichita State was #11 on the MVC Performance Charts in the Hammer Throw going into the meet, but he uncorked a PB of 191-08 (58.42M) to finish 7th a pick up an unexpected 2 points. That throw bested Jeff's previous best throw by 10-03.

Every little bit helps. Nice job, Jeff.

Yes, guess I should have mentioned that.

Grandpa, why do they call that a hammer throw? 'Cause if you don't do it properly you could get hammered:

http://yn-fun.de This athlete attempts the hammer throw for the first time but fails miserably slamming himself into the floor. That's what he gets for weari...

Against "form", the Shocks picked up a point here from ISU. They would have expected 8 and got 9, while we expected 0 and got 2. That's 1 point closer any way you slice it to the Trees.

As expected Tim Glover, the two-time defending national champion for Illinois State, easily won the men's javelin with a throw of 257.

The Shocks picked up 17 points from Sr. Jon Rizzo (2nd @ 231-11), Fr. Tyson Holmes (4th @ 193-11) and Fr. Dylan Reimer (5th @ 191-08).

Tyson and Dylan both threw well below their season best as did fellow Freshman Chase Pote. This may have cost the Shocks a couple of points they were hoping for.

Jon's throw, however, was 15-07 further than his previous season best.

That throw gets him to the NCAAs, yes?

                                Almost assuredly yes. http://www.ustfccca.org/weekly-resul...fying-criteria

In each individual event at each preliminary round site (East and West) the top 48 declared student-athletes are accepted (no ties). For relay relay races the Top 24 in each region are accepted. Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each preliminary championships competition site (East and West) to the final championships competition.

Jon was already sitting 29th in the West region and his teammate Tyson Holmes was sitting 32nd coming into the MVC Championships. This throw should move Jon inot the Top 10 in the West. http://www.directathletics.com/view_list.html

The decathlon and heptathlon are not contested in the preliminary rounds. The top 24 national performances in each event go directly to the National Championship.

Right now the Shocker men have 6 athletes that qualify for the West Regional preliminary competition: http://www.directathletics.com/view_list.html

Austin Bahner at #14 nationally also currently qualifies for the National Championships: http://www.directathletics.com/view_list.html
