Looks like we're getting a great recruiter. http://csnbbs.com/thread-815894.html

UCF head coach Donnie Jones has a large sphere of influence in the NBA and in coaching circles. That was on display Saturday as the Miami Heat visited town.

I don't believe he has been hired as the Associate Head Coach as the threads title states. I have not seen any reporting that Jones is being hired as the Associate Head Coach.

      Jon Rothstein
Wichita State's Gregg Marshall will hire Donnie Jones as an assistant coach, per multiple sources. Former head coach at Central Florida.

Jeff ******* stated "top assistant." Is that not associate head coach? I would think those mean the same thing.

They're not the same, but I'm not sure I could articulate the differences. I assume an associated HC is given more responsibility and has more influence with the HC than a top assistant.

His wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnie_Jones_(basketball) already has him listed as an Assistant Coach. That makes it official. :friendly_wink:

No, top asssistant does not mean the same thing. 3G did not have an Associate Head Coach during his 1st five years at WSU. Jans was promoted to Associate Head Caoch for the 2011 season and served in that capacity for 3 years before leaving for BG. 3G again did not have an Associate Head Coach for the 3 seasons after that until Chris Jans was restated to that position recently.

Typically you don't see coaches hired as an Associate Head Coach unless they have a relatively long and close relationship with the Head Coach or have previously served in that capacity under the Head Coach. Whether the title means a whole lot in practical terms or whether it is mostly to recognize loyal and high performing assistants plus make it clear what the pecking order is among assistants I can't say for sure.

Among AAC teams 4 have Associate Head Coaches and the rest do not at this point. Of some interest is that one of these 4 AAC AHC's is K.T. Turner who was on the Shocker staff in 2013 and is now AHC at SMU.

Per someone on the csnbbs forum: "He is a very good recruiter and one of the worst tactical basketball coaches I have ever seen in the sport on any level." Who knows how credible that is, but I always felt confident with Jans doing the scouting report for the team so this is a little disappointing to hear. But, if he brings in some stud recruits i'm sure I'll change my tune quickly enough.

GoShockers write up on the hire:

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State has hired veteran Donnie Jones to fill its men's basketball assistant coaching vacancy, head coach Gregg Marshall announced Wednesday.

"Jones has had a hand in the recruitment and development of 13 NBA Draft picks, most recently seven-footer, Hassan Whiteside, who led the NCAA in blocks during his lone season at Marshall. Currently a member of the Miami Heat, Whiteside was the NBA's 2016 blocks leader and captured the league's rebounding crown in 2017.

In addition, Jones signed Tacko Fall – the American Athletic Conference's 2017 Defensive Player of the Year – as part of his final UCF recruiting class.

Jones also excelled on the recruiting trail as an assistant. During his 11 years at Florida (1996-2007), the program signed 11 McDonald's High School All-America selections and boasted top-five national recruiting classes on five occasions. Following Florida's second national title in 2007, five of Jones' pupils -- Corey Brewer, Taurean Green, Al Horford, Joakim Noah and Chris Richard - were selected in the draft.
                            "

What I like about this that hasn't been mentioned yet is that Coach Jones appears to be a motivational positive-thinking type of a guy. That means that he should have a strong enough personality to help Gregg. Obviously, an assistant coach will understand his spot in the staff hierarchy, but a strong personality like Gregg doesn't need yes men on his staff either. Coach Jones should be strong enough to suggest that Gregg make in-game adjustments when needed.
