    • This Is the year of great competition. Anyone the thought that there were a lot of minutes open at the1 and 2 position this year would have to be drinking. There were a few minutes for rest, but not much. That is why coach Marshall asked a few people to redshirt. Didn't happen.

Remember the Final four line up with Armstead, Baker, Cotton, Early, and Hall. I think all of the starters were able to score with different strengths. Option number five was probably Cotton, who was a tremendous athlete that could take you off the drive and make you pay when you left him wide open. Obviously, this team did not put five players on the floor that were the same type of threats offensively. Some to young, some to one dimensional. Watch the early games at Orlando and see how desperate we were when Fred and Landry got hurt.

Here is what I hope happens for next years team.
      1. The point guard spot gets a jolt of athleticism. We will have difficulty replacing the craftiness, toughness, and leadership of running a team like Fed can do. But athletically, we can get better and coach recruits to the other traits mentioned above. Cleven Hannah, Malcolm Armstead, Torre Murray, and Joe Ragland were all very good players.

      2. We get bigger and stronger on the front line. Evan is all heart and worked so hard, but he was no 6'4 Charles Barkley. I have been a big Kelly fan but have not seen anything that says he should not be fighting for his life to win the position. The offensive highlight film of Willis is impressive with finishing and a soft touch in the mid range game. Different level but let the best man win between Kelly, Willis, Hamilton, and any other player coach may want to bring in to the program. He knows what he needs.

3 A more free flowing offense with less differing to the older players. This team needed to ride Baker and Fred. The other teams doubled team them a lot more off the pick and roll than before because we did not find more players to make them pay.

      4. More team athleticism. We had a lot of athletes that don't get the attention that they deserve. We had five block shots against Arizona and they had three with Tarnewski (not looking up the spelling sorry). All I heard throughout the game from the announcers was how we had no rim protectors. With Keyser, Smith, Willis. Shamet, and Reaves even though he is not as well known for that as his IQ and scoring ability.

Just some of my wishes for keeping the Marshall plan rolling. Anyway, I am spending t much time obsessing rather than enjoying the ride.

So, Baker and VanVleet said that Frankamp was the best shooter they had seen. They passed the ball to him, knowing that he could put it in the hoop. He passed it back to them to let one of them have the shot?

I think this actually happened. It could also be involved in Frankamp's not shooting in games the way he did in HS or in practice. When you're on the court with 2 AA guards - and you're a guard - and you take a shot, instead of letting one of the "stars" take the shot, there's some pressure.

At no time did I see Frankamp even make an attempt to get into the offense. He generally dribbled the ball out and waited for one of the other guards to come out and get the ball. He didn't test defenses, he didn't probe to see if he could break a defender down. He didn't dribble toward the basket to see if he could get an angle to make an inside pass.

He can hadle the ball. He can shoot off the dribble. His shooting off of screens and off of kicks to the outside from the inside were less effective than his shooting off the dribble, which is what he did in HS.

Frankamp had constraints in this year's offense? I don't understand these constraints. Please explain how Frankamp was constrained in this year's offense and how that will not exist in next year's offense.

              • The NCAA record, and it's still running, for consecutive 25 win seasons is 11 (including this season) for ku. UCLA and UNLV had 10. I don't know who else is active, but WSU is at 7.

Pretty amazing the consistency of success this program has had of late. Special, special times.

                  • I would love to see a starting 5 of Shamet, Frankamp, McDuffie, Willis, Morris. Backup 5 of Smith, Allen, Brown, Kelly, Nurger.

                    • Not sure if this has been posted anywhere but it fits in with this thread:

                      From the article:

"Even without Baker and VanVleet, Wichita State will be the Missouri Valley favorite again next season. Former four-star recruit and freshman forward Markis McDuffie is expected to make a jump, and sophomore starter Zach Brown returns. Darrlyn Willis, the 10th-ranked junior college recruit who chose the Shockers over Iowa State and Marquette, joins the roster, as well."

                      • To see the future simply look to the past. The 2011 and 2012 were fine teams in their own right. No Fred and Ron. Even with those two we have been surprised at how HCGM fills in holes year over year. With the guys returning, newcomers arriving and our fine coaching staff I expect continued success. Step back, step forward, who knows. The program will still be at a high level. I wouldn't be surprised that at the end of next year we all don't take a moment to reflect on how good the program has become.

                        • My take on Rashard Kelley is that he has demonstrated the ability and athleticism to get to the basket but has not mastered actually getting it into the basket. It reminds of Karl Papke and the Pause for Poise mantra he used to finally begin scoring. RS needs something like that.

                          • When I look at the future, I see our progression as buying certified pre owned and lower end new cars with financing.

We made some modifications and they ran great! We found some great cars and they got awesome gas mileage.

We are now paying cash for middle to higher end luxury vehicles.

Hopefully, very soon, we will be buying high end sportscars.

                            • Two observations:

**A JUCO transfer is not starting for us at the beginning of the year. Cleanthony Freakin' Early, JUCO Player of the Year, came off the bench for us in his junior season. Even though Willis is the #10 ranked JUCO player, and I think he's going to be awesome for us, it takes awhile for newcomers to learn Marshall's system.

**Only once--ONCE--in Fred and Ron's four years did WSU earn a higher NCAA seed than the 2012 squad. We had success before Ron and Fred, and even though next year we'll probably take a step back, we're going to be just fine in the future.
"It's amazing to watch Ron slide into that open area, Fred will find him and it's straight cash homie."--HCGM

                              • After the 2012 season, we lost 5 starters, several were 4 year fixtures. The following year, we had talent, but largely unknown how they would come together. Here's a comparison of that team we had coming in, that eventually made the Final 4, to the team we have coming back in next year:

Armstead (transfer from Oregon where he avg. 8.6 pts a game) - we have Frankamp (Jr.) avg 6.1 pts per game
Baker (RS Fr got hurt and played post season avg 8.7 pts as Fr) - we have RS Fr Shamet who avg 8.7 pts before going out last year
Cotton (So that avg 2.9 pts and 1.5 reb as a Fr) - we have McDuffie (So) that avg 7.4/3.3 as a Fr
Early (transfer avg 20.4/11.5 in JUCO) - we have Willis coming in that avg 18.4/10.8 in JUCO
Hall (Sr avg 8.4/5.0 as a Jr) - we have Shaq Morris that avg 6.8/3.6 as a Soph

                                Bench:
                                D. Williams (Sr that avg 5.5/2.0 as a Jr) - we have Z. Brown that avg 6.7/2.9 as a soph
                                N. Wiggins (transfer JUCO) - we have Daishon Smith transfer JUCO, we also have Peyton Allen coming in after sitting ont he bench a year
Fred VanVleet (highly touted true Frosh that came off the bench at point) - we have Austin Reaves that lights it up in high school and will likely come off the bench and play some point
Orukpe - (defensive player that couldn't score a bucket to save his life) - we have Kelly that can't score but plays good D (actually scores 4.1 pts per game) - we also have emerging Rauno Nurger and raw but athletic Eric Hamilton

I didn't even mention Ty Taylor. It's an intersting comparison when you look at known talent coming back plus the unknown hopeful talent coming in. I'd say we're deeper than the Final 4 team going into next year, a lot of the same question marks, and even better in some instances.
