This. aTm was the perfect job for someone like him but I think that he thought a job at Maryland would make it easy for him to get to the next level. A couple more underachieving seasons like this one and he's going to find himself out of a job. A school where basketball is 3rd or 4th on the sport hierarchy is a much better fit for him.

      Both statements 100% true.
Bingo. MT repaired the damage done over the abyss of the 1990s, but his ceiling here was likely to be no greater than the Sweet 16. HCGM was able to take even the bare cupboard left for him and immediately move things forward. Keep in mind HCGM's only season without getting into some kind of postseason tournament was his first year here. The 2009 CBI and the two NIT appearances were the launching pad for our current success. And for anyone out there thinking we are done now that Fred and Ron have graduated, well, you just keep thinking that...

Prior to this year, Maryland hadn't been to the Sweet 16 since 2003! That means zero trips to the second weekend in the last 8 seasons of Gary Williams tenure, and in 4 of those 8 seasons, Maryland didn't even make the tournament at all. Williams retired along with a bunch of graduating seniors following a 19-14 year, so Turgeon didn't exactly inherit a stacked team in the fall of 2011.

With all of that said, Maryland's 4 seed and round of 32 appearance last year was as good of a year as Maryland had seen in a long time. This year's 5 seed and Sweet 16 was easily their best year in over a decade.

While it is always possible he could fall out of favor, I really doubt his job is in any jeopardy any time soon.

The fanbase is already pretty split on if he's their guy or not and I don't think they're going to be better next year. The negative fans are certainly going to be vocal, I have no idea if that means the AD will feel any pressue to make a move.

          • Ironic that all 3 current and former turgeon coached teams lose and get knocked out in one week.

Meh, I think McDermott has a lock on the Schottenheimer Trophy.

I hear ya, but the fact of the matter is he's done a respectable job with what he had when he got here. I agree the fan base is still not convinced, their bigger concern is the dumpster fire that is their football program. The athletic department is a huge financial mess and I'm not sure they could afford to fire him and find a new, possibly more expensive option.

To say nothing of what WSU did for Turgeon.

Even Marshall has the good sense to say he didn't build this thing. He just refurbished it. I don't think h's just being politically correct in saying that.

It Bowles would have stayed (meaing T. did too) who knows what they could have accomplished with Wichita's backing.

I think 3 terrible hires made what he did seem like it was some Herculean effort. But let's not forget that we had just renovated Koch. The job was teed up and put there on a platter for the next coach to take and succeed.

Thank you MT, for being a comptetent coach.

Thank you for making the program attractive for GM.

Thank you GM for applying your vision and taking the program to the next level.
Just to clarify, most of the reason we were able to renovate the Chuck was because of Mark. It was NOT being renovated when he was hired.

I'm not saying he was 100% responsible for the fund raising, but he was a part of it, and a sizable one at that. It doesn't get done without him here.

                      • In the NCAA East Regional it is 37-36 with 8:50 to go. The scoreboard says it is Wisconsin - Notre Dame, but I'm pretty sure this is really Bradley - Drake.
