Well it was a chilly morning here in Jersey today. Got into a nice parking spot well early enough before the doors opened and decided to go find some place warm while we waited. Passed by Dino BBQ but it was a bit too early and stumbled into this building caddy-corner to Prudential. Got some Dunkin Donuts in this office building and realized it turned into the Hilton, which then turned out to be the team hotel. Couldn't believe it. Lots of Shocker fans milling around and as the 4 of us ate our food in the downstairs lobby, there goes Lynn and Maggie prancing on by. Lynn is ready and rearing at all times. Seems very fun to be around. They all headed towards their ground transports and we wallowed back to the "Rock". Nice building. Clearly the home of the Devils though.
5 minutes left til tipoff and the lower bowl was maybe 1/4th of the way full. Probably 30% Shocker fans at that point. Great representation of Shocker Nation, embarrassing statement by Seton Hall. It did fill though with a late arriving crowd in the middle sections.
Lots of Shocker fans in Section 7. We were nestled up towards the top. First half was fun. After about 10 minutes, it really felt like we were gonna cruise to a 20 point blowout. Place was like a morgue. Honestly, the CenturyLink Center may have more of an atmosphere than this place. They just don't cheer and definitely don't sustain it, no matter how the announcer pleaded, as he would curiously give a brief play-by-play or nugget every time Seton Hall scored (a little annoying).
The Seton Hall fanbase was cordial though, many saying they couldn't believe we made the trip so far away. Pirate fans loved the club section above us at halftime. Well into the second half too. Seemed like it turned into a social gathering rather than a basketball game. As Seton Hall came back in the 2nd, some bandie 25 year olds started chirping a bit more behind us on the concourse. Still though, mostly everyone else was pretty pleasant. Lynn and a SHU fan got into a small yelling match about what was a foul. The SHU fan ran 10 rows down from his seat to engage with her. I thought that was pretty childish. Lynn didn't back down though. That was funny.
Such a winnable, winnable game. Couldn't believe how close FVV's desperation heave at the end of regulation nearly fell in.
The place got loud at the end, because they knew they escaped with a marquee win with some zebra help. Lots of bandies though. Half of the fans we encountered after they game thought we were ranked. Still though, no ribbing. Good fanbase.
Kinda soured the start of our vacation week. Only temporarily. Gonna spend some time with the in-laws, putz around, head into the city later, and enjoy the holiday. Players represented well and so did the fanbase. Had several people compliment how surprised they were to see how well we traveled. Considering the complete hose job, I thought our fans behaved well. We complained, but weren't assholes about it or anything. And SHU fans knew they were getting an early Christmas present from the officials.
Whitehead is a little *****. He has good game but it is a punk and a thug. The fact that he's done the staredown thing multiple times tells me how undisciplined he is. Too bad.
Oh and the Pirates of the Caribbean theme where everybody does their weird Pirate arm-flapping reminded me of the dumbass Wildcat Wabash Cannonball where it looks like everybody's trying to impregnate the air. Really weird. Oh and help out the flag-barrer guy. I thought he was gonna take out some cheerleaders before he got his bearings together.
