  • My two cents, FWIW. If Landry is healthy and can play Shocker "Play Angry" basketball for any length of this year's schedule, Coach Marshall will not red shirt him (that is, of course, if Landry himself doesn't want the red shirt). 3G likes to win, and he builds his teams to compete in the tournament, not just the Valley.

A healthy Shamet come tournament time makes this team so much more dangerous, especially with the improvement we're seeing from Markis and Zach Brown's continued development. Not to mention Frankamp. The minutes will work themselves out because Marshall will start using his players based on matchups.

And come March, I see this team being seriously under-seeded much like Kentucky was in 2014 as we are having a similar season they did in 2013-2014 with high expectations and potential as a National Champion (they weren't saddled with injuries to key players but pre-season expectations had them ranked number 1 and numerous non-conference and conference losses doomed them to a number 8 seeding. We all know how that turned out.).

And I think we'll surprise and sorely disappoint some P5 teams on our way to the Sweet 16.

      1. Landry's injury probably isn't truly "season-ending", which is a requirement to receive a medical hardship waiver.
      2. This is Fred, Ron, Evan and Anton's last year. Why would Marshall not use all the weapons at his disposal?
      3. There's reason to believe Landry wouldn't be here for a 5th year anyway.

I don't see how any of that leads one to reasonably think he won't return and play this season.
If you are correct and he can't get a medical redshirt, why is Gregg holding onto the current story. The redshirt for this year must be in play. Your other points are valid.

When Wessel broke his pinky finger on his shooting hand in December of 2012, then it must have been season ending and there was no way he could have come back and played.

I think it would be harder for someone with a foot injury to come back then someone with a finger injury.

        • Absolutely. Too much pain to return 100%would be the reason

If you believe some, it didn't matter if Evan was hurt...not that big a cog anyway....:)

That should help kill the thread :)

Notice I said "probably". Until he's cleared, Marshall just can't know for sure. The point is, based on everything I've read and shared here about medical hardship waivers, that decision does not rest with Landry or Marshall, but with the doctors and trainers.

                • Even if Landry comes back, will he be in game shape fast enough. And by being in game shape, I'm talking about not only conditioning but playing in the system. He would have been out quite a while at that time and his coming back could throw off the chemistry and rhythm this team has. That takes time to develop and we may be out of time to incorporate him into the flow. Then again, I am sooooo glad we have Marshall and staff to make that evaluation and decision. And, of course, Landry will have something to say about it.

About 7 years ago I slammed my thumb in my car door and broke it. That was some knee buckling pain.

Wait...Don't you only have 5 years to use 4 years eligibility, unless you have a regular redshirt and a special medical redshirt, then 6, or if you are Grant Gibbs you have 7

I have Jackie Chiles working on my case, we're in a holding period with the NCAA.

That must be one very long thumb you have!

The "season-ending" injury must occur before the team has played half of its non-conference schedule. In Landry's case, if he came back, played and then had a different injury, that injury would not be reason for a medical redshirt. As to the first injury, it might depend upon if he comes back and reinjures that foot in the first game or perhaps two, it might be ruled that he was not ready to play and could be awarded, as an exception, a medical redshirt based on the prior injury. A la Nate Funk.
