One heck of a first game. The year before, SIU absolutely killed us in the Coliseum.. I think it was 94-59 or something. It sure looked like this game was gonna be the same way, but the team showed a lot of fight and heart that night, despite the loss.

I do love how often that game comes up on here. I think I've read WuDrWu post about it at least five times, and it never gets old. :)

Just wanted to post to show off my new sig
One quick note before we present the rankings: With Wichita State’s move to the American Athletic Conference, the Shockers have moved out of the mid-major club. We wish the Shockers well against Cincinnati, UConn, SMU, and more.

Logged in for the first time in a bit to comment on this:

          1. Excited for our boys!

          2. My most memorable Shocker games:

          A. The Beatdown of UMES in winter of 06: The day my grandfather died....parents and GF (now wife) encouraged me to go. Really needed that game.

          B. The NIT home game vs FSU: First time I remember thinking "We're every bit as good as most D1 teams".

This was the first Shockers game, as well as first high level college basketball game I ever attended. I had lived in ICT for only a few years, so had watched a couple of games on TV, and my wife had gone to school at WSU, so I liked and cheered for the team, but a friend gave me tickets to this game. They were not great seats, but it didn't matter. The atmosphere was electric. That was the day I fell in love with the Shockers. I think my second favorite attended game was 31-0. Everyone knew that was something special.

Kudos to Ron and Fred. As is the case these guys are not only very good basketball players, but even better persons. After 2 long practices for the day. Fred comes over to say hi and talk to my son after he finishes practice and wraps up his other responsibilities. He talks to us and then calls Ron over after he finishes up his media responsibilities and get this picture with them. I'm not on other social media, but Fred also took a selfie with him and my son and said something about posting somewhere. Great guys!!! Separate post on my observations will be coming

There was no live scrimmage in the 75 minutes I got to observe. They were getting a lot of shots up, then worked on their secondary break, walking thru about 4 different options all off a read. After walking thru the secondary break they went up and down with 4 trips going thru different options. Also worked a good deal on their on ball screen defense in different situations and how they want to defend different situations. This was really the only competitive session of practice. Fred lookded very good in this session and Ron more than held his own. Tarczewski was a beast during this session.

IMO, there were 2 of the 16 players that I think will be cut (neither Ron or Fred) that seemed to struggle with some of the concepts they were teaching. As I mentioned Tarczewski was dominant during practice, Fred found him several times on pick n roll plays, as well as the other guards. Bobby Brown will definitely be on the team as the senior member, NBA experience, international to provide leadership. He was Few's coach on the floor, definitely demonstrating whatever Few or Mike Brown wanted to show. Brown was also very involved with practice and instruction. Denzel Valentine, Nigel Hayes, Fred all had good practices in addition to the ones named above. For what its worth from watching one practice I would be very surprised if Fred doesn't make the team, I would also expect Ron to make it based on this one practice, but not as clear cut.

Did get a chance to talk to Coach Boyle briefly after talking to Ron and Fred. It was good to talk to him and talk to him about what he saw for CU in the coming season. I jokingly suggested he needed to call Gregg and set up a home/home series and get a chance to come back to Wichita and let fans appreciate him for what he did.

                      That's just fantastic stuff.

You can log on, see the pic of this person's son with 2 of the all time greats of the program, read his comment and notes, and your Shocker soul is completely replenished.

                      Thanks so much for sharing.

That was kinda my thought going into the tryouts. I felt Fred had a good chance, but Ron might find it a little harder.

You mentioned 2 players you thought will be cut. Do you have names? Were they guards?

Is that ice bags that Ron Baker has on his knees and left hip area? Dude is a warrior but we need him healthy for the upcoming season.

You son has a memory and a photo that he'll hang onto for the rest of his life. Very cool.

I think it is, but it doesn't necessarily signify a problem. Many high level athletes ice up after workouts in order to help their muscles recover more quickly. Some will even take ice baths.

I "ice up" after a few beers; 12-ounce curls really take a toll on the ole elbow.
